Re: 1957 Duracraft Duraflite Custom

Not sure I understand what you're getting at???
Sorry WOG, over in the Duracraft forum thread, I mentioned that there wasn't a splashwell on the Duracraft & although I'd like to cover a battery & bilge pump, if I did, and I need to quickly access them under the cover, there wasn't very good access, as the rear bench & seat back are fixed & full height/width.....

But after looking again, there is a fair amount of access thru that gap you reposted. And this is sounding all the more likely too:
I can't seem to find a pix, but I know I've seen a tonneau cover type snap in cover on a Feathercraft or other vintage tin boat that didn't have a splashwell either.....

A vinyl tonneau type cover might fit the bill nicely. Duracraft built it w/ out a splashwell, so no splashwell thru hull drains either... I'm increasing leaning towards not fabricating a splashwell, which saves me the trying to make it look like it was originally there......

I won't ever be on anything even remotely considered big water, nor offshore, so except because of the Fat50 & the boat being stern heavy, folllowing seas washing over the transom is extremely unlikely......

Duly noted GA  If not tonight, by the end of the long weekend.

I plan to steal a little time Sun am, but that may be counter to the Admiral's plans.....

Else, I'll be on-site w/ the boat Monday all day & may get some work & boat work done on Veterans Day. <<<< I thank all those that choose to serve, for their service!

Thank you very much!

Re: 1957 Duracraft Duraflite Custom

jb - Those Duracrafts are stout boats. I flipped one earlier this year. Just a simple utility and not a stylish as yours. If a great deal popped up around here I'd definitely try and snag it. Here was mine http://forums.iboats.com/boat-topic...cs/14-duracraft-utility-maybe-50s-599590.html

Nice looking boat, great work flipping it. Although, I too like the shark's teeth out front :watermelon:

Too bad Toad was a 1 & done poster. Sounded like he was extremely happy w/ the boat....

If you can make a cover that fits tight enough around the o/b rigging I would think that should keep at least some unwanted water out .
Ya know it seems funny and maybe I'm not the only one . But I find myself while driving down the local roads checking out backyards and garages for possible project boats .. I think I may need some kind of help .. :watermelon:

SP: The Admiral is on to my tricks

No more lazy Sunday afternoon drives on a rural 2lane just to 'look at the fall colors'

And absolutely refuses to bird dog garages on her side of the freeway from the car....

So yep, you are not alone.....

BTW: Those of you w/ smartphones, many have a geocaching feature that allows you to shot a pix & save it w/ GPS coordinates attached for easy navigation back...

Oops, ^^^ my geek is showing.... :watermelon:

I haven't sewn anything yet w/ the Singer I purchased, but I've been thinking that a good fitting cover, w/ well placed welting in the field and cording along the edge, might stay taut & protective as well....

Uh, yeah, I admitted to myself a long time ago that I'll probably always be light on that ^^^ sliding scale, esp when the Admiral owns the scale..... But for some reason she still loves me anyway :watermelon:

So, we're good........ And this is the more balanced, normal me.....

Jeez, I'd hate to go back & see the me from back before the Admiral got me straightened out.... :cold:

Enough gibberish ^^^^ How 'bout this weather?

You got any more pix of that 1? Hard to see, but it's the 1st I've seen w/ one....

Nope, googled duracraft -images - and that was one that popped up. Sure looks flat, no drain holes, has to be low enough to mount the motor. Maybe it drains to the bilge?

Re: 1957 Duracraft Duraflite Custom

Maybe it's at the perfect angle and the seat is what is flat? There is no shadow on it.
I think that the seat back is the dark in shadow part and what looks sort of like a flat splash well is the gap between the top of the rear bench seat & the bottom edge of the seat back.......

The gap is the light colored area that runs from the port 'wing' & the port side of the OB...

I too have the dreaded back yard boat gazing syndrome (BYBGS).

I see what your saying after checking over what your splashwell area looks like. I think your idea's great for a vinyl snap in cover for it, especially if your going to be putting ugly things in there like a fuel tank, rigging, bilge pump and hoses. Of my 35 years of boating, I have never taken on much if any water over a splashwell, at least that a good bilge pump couldn't evacuate before it became a problem. If a boat is loaded properly then it should ride up and over swells. If it's so rough that it could swamp you then most likely your not having much fun and one should be off the water.

Yep, I've only ever had water over the transom once, and it was in calm conditions, helmsman at fault w/ the throttle....

I was thinking something along these lines w/ welting/ribbing:
splashwell_zpsa493d943.jpg

Cream vinyl @ the field to match the paint on the cap (similar to original) w/ red welting/ribbing/edging to match the red accent color (which will be present (color similar to original), but not the same way as original {although that may change as I do like the red 'arrow' along the hull side})

Did get a hour at the shop this am, but no meaningful work was accomplished.......

Here's my take on those loops. I'd bet its for a removable Seat back. Something like this, made with an aluminum pipe that would slip down into the loops.
