I have a 56 7.5 h johnson it has a factory hole in the side of
The block the engine sometimes backfires through and exhaust noise
If i plug the hole with my finger the motor quiets down
And smooths out and revs up and seems to run normal ??
Is it supposed to be plugged?? If so with what?

you should start a new thread bob, you will get more, and better answers! post pics of the location of the hole. ( could be the oil feed line from the bottom of the engine to the top.....dont run it until it is confirmed what the hole is!!!....or you may end up with non-factory holes in the block!!)

So its been a little bit a time figured i need to update everyone. The 1956 Johnson now has a completely new ignition system, coils, points, condensers, wires, and plugs. I took apart the carb and soaked it for a few days replace the gaskets on it also. The lower end and exhaust housing are apart from the transom mount and motor tilt mechanism, cowling is ready for paint now. Although I don't have the perfect "johnson holiday bronze" paint I do have access to enough free safety red paint for the whole motor.

The transom mount is getting sandblasted today and I hope to paint everything this weekend with any luck. I know its not original but the red pops.

I did see this guys website, he does a great job, unfortunately 75$ a quart is a bit steep for me to justify. I work for a machine OEM machine builder and a customer ordered a machine with this safety red color. Although it is different it is free along with the self ethcing primer that we use on our machine too. I do plan on getting the decals from NYmarine.ca for sure.
