I'm going to go out finish putting the gear case on and hopefully try and start it. I got this engine for free and it came with every part for the gearcase new in box with reciepts. The guy was older and he had just bought a 115hp 4stroke mercury and he was like I'm done tinkering with engines here have this.

Lol ya I definitely know what it means. The problem for me is that I like to rebuild and restore anything old and with and engine. I don't have a problem spending the money its the wife that does lol.

Whats the best way to clean the points on these old outboards? Getting ready to clean and set them now. Found a good YouTube channel that is all about vintage outboards but I don't see a good video on cleaning.

Is this groove supposed to be in this. It's only on the one side. It's in the upper part of the gear case. The driveshaft goes through it

Sorry for all the newb questions. Do these old engines not have a reverse lockout? Or do I just tighten the bolt that goes through the mount My 89 has a switch on the engine to lock it in place to make sure the engine doesn't move while in reverse.

I really appreciate all the help even if you think I'm annoying lol.

I don't have the answer but don't be afraid to ask questions....we are all newb's really!

My grandfather always said, " better to appear to be the fool than to be the fool"

Asking questions when one doesn't know is always good.

Alright. I was just curious because on the ones I found online to buy don't have the groove. What about if there is a reverse lockdown?

Questions is why we are all here. No need to be shy.
As for the bushing groves. Some may say newer materials don’t require them. I say it’s one less step in the manufacturing process so it saves them money. As they say “They don’t make ‘‘em like they used to”
As for your lock down sorry I can’t answer that for you.
Best

With a dremel tool , you can put these grooves in.----Does not need to be very precise.-----If you understand how oil " works " in a bearing / bushing then you would put these grooves in !

Um, a bit of misunderstanding here. Previously posted lockdown was for 1955-up. Here is 1954 version, item #64. It is latched automatically by putting shifter in reverse.
