No rods on the boat this time .. It’s been a while since we ran it good and we just decided to do some sight seeing...
And we usually fish at low tide first of the in coming anyway ...

I need a set of oars and locks .. Thinking on making them myself ... From what little research I have done I think I could pull it off .. Thinking maybe cedar?
‘Any suggestions ?

That would be cool project Sam. Cedar would seem to make sense, but never really researched what would be a good choice. I saw a guy make some a few years ago, but I can't remember what he used. For some reason I am thinking it was a hardwood, which seems like a better choice after thinking about it, maybe more closed grain and less likely to soak up water? IDK, but heavier for sure. I will be interesting to see what people recommend.

I dont see cedar being anywhere strong enough. most oars are ash or white oak, however I have seen some maple.

Yeah your probably right on the cedar .. It is nice and light weight though . Maybe for the blades then glass epoxy and varnish .. Might go see what what the yard where I got the mahogany from has .
Cypress is a thought .
Using the oar length formula on one of the links Kc posted I need roughly an 8’-10” oar ...

I have a pair of wood oars for my drift boat. I swear they're made of ash or oak. Good god they are flippin heavy! I used a set of the carbon fiber Cataract oars that Scott suggested on a float trip on the Deschutes one year and man are they nice. I wouldn`t get them for use in a classic wood boat either probably. But if you used them back to back against a pair of wooden oars you'd be sorely tempted I`ll bet.

Cheers................Todd

Thanks guys ! I can get spruce off the shelf at HD .. I think I may use a combination of spruce and cedar . The reason for them is the motor has no neutral or reverse. So I figured it would be good for docking and putting on and off the trailer ..
Idk ,it might be good rehab for my back to row around a bit ..

Hope everyone had a nice Mother’s Day weekend !
We took mom out for a seafood lunch then a nice long drive out down the St Johns river and a lot of the places we used to frequent growing up on the river and inlets .. Was a beautiful drive and the weather was great ! I could tell she really enjoyed seeing all the places we used to hang out .. Here’s mom and grandson .. Still gets around pretty well at 90 years young !

Thanks guys ! Surgery went good but recovery kicked my butt :faint2:...
Never been put to sleep before so getting things working afterwards was pretty rough ..
Im up and walking around fine and have some meds to take . The Admiral took these 3 days off work to stay with me at the house which is great ! I’m a pretty lucky dude to have her for my wife . I’d be lost without her for sure ..
Hope everyone has a great rest of the week and weekend !
