Looking good archbuilder, sounds like you will be painting in no time. I didn't see it in the thread anywhere, but have you come up with an interior design yet?

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Frog, I found a supplier for the seats and vinyl, still need to finish up the back seat design. I kind of got stuck on that so I flipped the boat and went to work on the paint. Once I flip it, paint the top, then I'm going to get back on the interior.

Jspano, I'm going with a wood frame in panels that I can store by hanging them from my barn rafters. I have a 1950 Mercury and a 1946 Chevy truck that are next...so I wanted to have a nice booth for those projects. I looked at PVC, but I thought door openings were problematic. The square / rectangular shapes of wood lend themselves better to providing a good door / jamb seal. I was also a little concerned that the Oklahoma wind might send a PVC frame sailing when I have the overhead doors open. 20 or 30 MPH winds are fairly normal here. One other item, I already have quite a bit of the lumber. I have a full set of plans and a cut list put together. Once I have it actually built (that way I can check for error in the drawings / cut list) I'll post it. I need to put together a quantity take off, then head to the store. Its supposed to get nasty again tomorrow:mad:, so I want to make sure I have everything in the shop today.

I just got through reading your post. Your doing a great job on your boat. It is a lot of hard work but it will pay off in the end. It looks great as it is. Can't wait to see the finished product. Keep up the great post.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Arch I've been following your "redo" since day 1. If I may make a suggestion regarding your seating arrangement. I have an 18' ski boat with a 140 hp O/B (Johnson), the bottom is almost dead flat (a copy of the old California Drag/Ski boat design), It has an 18 gal. gas tank mounted under the front deck, the seating arrangement is like this, Bucket type seats facing frontwards,(same as most boats) there are a "bucket" type seats, (attached to the front ones) facing back towards the transom, (same as most boats). The boat builder then extended these seats approx. 4' down the sides of the boat(almost to the motorwell and the transom the backs are of couse upholstered. There are probably hundreds of boats with this seating arrangment. Now keep in mind with the gas tank upfront, the weight of your passengers being towards the front your boat would easily get on plane. Its been our experience with a merc that they seem to want to "rev" quite high before actually get the boat up on plane, now add to this your gas tanks being at the bank near its transom plus any passengers sitting (dead weight) back there I don't think you'll be happy with the way your boat will perform, lack of acceleration, the continual "porposseing) unless at full or near full throttle. Just a thought, take for what its worth.
By the way when using are boat in the skiing mode it will nearly stand on its transom when you first accelerate sometimes scaring any 1st time passengers

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Thanks for the thoughts Bailey! I have also contemplated the back to back arrangement, and haven't ruled it out. I would like to go with the tanks I have since they are paid for. I have thought about moving them to the bow, with a hose extension...once I have it up and going....to see how it changes the handling. If it works I would be open to a non-removable tank. I actually like the idea of scaring the newbies, lol the bow pointing skyward might be good for some laughs!:D You have a good point with the center of gravity, I wish I had more info on the original layout of the boat. When I got it there was a "back seat" (who knows where it came from) and a couple of "jet boat" seats, both of which were trashed. I doubt any of it was original. Once I get it flipped I will ponder it more, let me know if you have any other suggestions. If you have any pictures of yours I would like to see them. I'm more or less making up the interior on this one....one of the reasons I went on to paint was that the interior didn't "feel right" yet.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Arch,
I thought about what Bailey said on the gas tank thing and weight distribution. That is why my neighbor said he bought a bigger tank and put it up front under the bow- because whenever everyone was in the back and they were using the ski's the boat never ran on plane with the tanks in the back.
I have no cause I am new at this boat stuff but???
Moving a permanent tank up front too would fix your seating issue in the back. You can make the back seat permanent and not have to worry about moving it or flipping it down to fill up all the time. It may be worth it just to change out the tanks before you put all kinds of work into the seats in the back.

I got my foam in last night- the deck is solid as a rock now- amazing!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Hey archbuilder,
I like the idea of a permanent gas tank too. Mine is located pretty close to the center of my boat. I guess that would make it pretty neutral as far as CG is concerned. I also have an access hatch to get to it, if I have any problems. Well, I should say I had and I will again when I get the deck back in.
How's the prep coming??

Arch- Here is my gas tank.

Here is where it will sit up in the bow.

If I remember correctly- you have plenty of room up under your bow. You just have to pop a hole in your cap, and put a gas cap on it.

Just something else for you to think about before you go trying to create a back seat that you have to constantly have to flip or move to fill up.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

A bit of advice on where to cut a hole for a filler cap. Put it horizontal. Mine was vertical and adding oil to the tank was a paint in the butt. I had to use a flexible funnel and it would leak whereever I stored it. I filled the hole and am moving it to the top so I can pour oil right in. My tank is in the worst location for planing. It is right in front of the transom and covers the bilge. But it is nice that I can look back and see how much fuel I have since my gauge didnt work last year. It will this year.

one other thing the po did when he had the bow tank installed. they ran a vent line all the way to the back, i guess to avoid fumes blowing back over the rest of the boat

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Thanks for the ideas guys, I will think about it when I get back to the interior. By the time I got to "work" yesterday it was 3:00. I spent the morning finishing up the drawing / cut list for the paint booth. After that I did a materials take off and rounded up what I didn't already have. Then i had to move all kinds of crap around to get it all in the shop and a place to build the booth. I did manage to get some work done on the boat. I did the body work on the "dent" I found. Strange, it looks like a flaw from the factory mold. I check the other side and no "dent"...it was really shallow, probably why I didn't notice it before.

IMG_2993.jpg

I should be able to block it out, then shoot one more coat of primer on it. I'll probably do that tonight last thing....that stuff is nasty! I have noticed this boat is really "wavy"...not real strait. I realize its glass, but this one seem worse than normal...maybe it's just because its 40 years old and the technology isn't as good as it is today?

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

I also fixed the voids in the upper corners of the transom. I thought we had it completely full, but when I flipped it I noticed some dark spots in the corners (the rest of it looks pink from the seacast). I started out by drilling some small holes along the top side of the voids...they were kind of L shaped. I also used those for vents to let air out. After I found the boundrys of the void, I drilled a hole at the highest point of the void. The void tappered as it went up, so I ended up with a small void above my hole.

IMG_2984.jpg

The hole was the same size as I used to pour the foam in the deck. I took my foam funnel and filled it with secast, then pushed it into the void with a big dowel rod...very messy process by the way. Here are a couple of shots mixing up the seacast....weird stuff. I'm sure somewhere in my "1/2" Milwaukee drill manual" there is a warning not to take pictures with one hand while operating the drill with the other....

IMG_2989.jpg

IMG_2990.jpg

I did panic a bit during the process....I mixed it up, added the catalysis, then went to put in the fibers....except they weren't where I left them or thought I left then..........after 5 minutes a little panic kicked in..... I finally found them right where I moved them too

Here is the final product, I left the heater on to help it set up, rock solid this morning.

Nice work on the dent and the seacast! Great pics to on it! I think everyone on here has a couple pair of jeans that look like yours that are stained with a mix of seacast, poly, glue, fiberglass, dust, dirt, etc... I currently have 3 pair that I rotate regularly!

Here you can see where the vent is on my boat for the gas tank that jspano was talking about (the chrome circle before the PA letters. My neighbor put it here to avoid running a line to the back.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

That is actually a "new pair" of jeans Mick. Most of what you are seeing on them is sanding sludge....it washes right out. I do have a pair of "poly jeans", I'm hoping they will become a fashion statement. I have a vent like that one on my sea ray. I do have room up under the bow, but I'm not sure its enough for a 19 gallon tank. I'm still planing on using the 6 gallon tanks when I first put it on the water. I can always extend the fuel line and put them forward to see how the boat handles. From what I can tell, the boat came with tanks in the back, I hate changing the manufacturers design. That puts stresses on the hull that weren't taken into consideration when it was designed. I'm going to measure today to see if a bow tank will even fit. Most of today will probably be sanding and small projects....I might get started on the paint booth too. I'll try to update things before the game.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Here's some pictures of my boat; is it not the exact same model? There is also an emblem on the dash that says "Newport"; perhaps the specific model name?

I believe the seats are the originals. Just a pair of fixed forward/rear seats with a rounded side panel. I doubt it ever had a rear seat.

I've have now removed the old motor and controls to get it ready for a new ETEC.

Hey archbuilder,
You don't have to worry about your jeans being a fashion statement, on this forum they are the normal. If you are wearing clean jeans then you aren't working hard enough. :p:D.
I have several pairs that are for just such uses.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Bob, the reason I'm hoping my jeans become a fashion statement is because of what my inteior designer told me....she pays $175 for jeans with holes in them....I figure the poly should get them up to at least $200. If I sell a couple of pair a week, I should have plenty of money for the boat habit!

Creativers, things just fell in place....my title says Newport....1968. Sounds like they put the model not the make on the title. Do you have a manf. tag for yours? Mine was in the splash well, I have a pic of it posted somewhere. What about the fuel tanks? That seems to be the latest question. I would love to see any other pics you have of it. All of the emblems on mine are gone (along with about everything else). I'm printing pics of the seats and heading to the upholster! Thanks for the info, I was starting to wonder if mine was the only one out there!

Hey arc,
Let me know if it comes to be. Mine qualify in all the listed areas. Perhaps we could get a patent on them. :p
