Re: 16' 1967 Silverline Rambler Restoration

I get my breaks all week when I'm stuck planning the weekend work:D I had about 24-26 hours work on it this weekend, 3 Sat, 12 Sun, and 10 yesterday! My girlfriend was stuck with weekend shifts so I made hay (boat) while the sun shined (free time). I hate think how long this would have taken chipping away at a few hours at a time:eek:

I'd love to say the bow section fit as well, but thats what PB is for:redface: It did work well having the blue foam to tweak the profile.

The boat is in my parents barn outside of Marshall. I work in Ohio all week, and school is in Flint at Kettering. Rachael is from up there, so many weeknds I'm sure I pass your area on I69 from Marshall to there. Once I get the boat trailerable I'll drag it up to work on while I'm up at school this summer.

Enjoy the SS!

Hey tdrudd87,
Very nice work. That foam job and floor look great. I'll bet it really feels solid.
Couldn't have done better myself.
It was also funny reading your last post. I know where Marshall is. I used to rent planes in Marshall. I worked in several towns around there. Homer, and Coldwater. It's a small world.

Once again, great Job.

Really really nice work on the foam and the floor. Couldn't be any more solid. Great use of the foam sheets for templating.

You are doing a beautiful job. And the boat brings back memories. My parents had a '66 Silverline 16 footer, orange gelcoat, that looked just like your in the dash, etc. Keep up the great work, (and school)!:)

Small world indeed Bob! Ha, the Gander Mountain in Coldwater is one of my regular stops during hunting season on the way home from work!

Thanks for the compliments guys! It felt soo good to feel how solid the boat is getting, even when I was just walking on the blue foam. I'm hoping the 1/2" ply covered both sides with 1708 will feel like it is built like a tank!

IES99, very cool, glad to remind you of it! Provided I survive my last term, school will soon move from the doing to done column! Come on September!

Thanks guys!

That deck will feel like you are walking on concrete. I did mine with 3/4" and couldn't be happier with it. The epoxy really stiffens the plywood. Good stuff:)

Re: 16' 1967 Silverline Rambler Restoration

So had a pretty good weekend...

Got the bottom of the deck trimmed:

Then it was on to putting it in. I decided to use PL, and fastened with screws to prevent floating. I put the deck in to quadruple check the fit, set up the stringline again, and using my handy-dandy table of offsets, marked the screwholes to hit the stringers.

Wrestled it back out, and got to squirting! Used a contractor sized tube, 28oz, on top of the stringers as well as strung around on top of the foam. Then dropped the floor back one, and got to drilling and screwing!

Once that was done, I was pumped!!!!!My boat has a floor!!! Took a lot of pictures of the same thing:redface:

That was only a few hours of work, spent a lot of time working on my parents house they are trying to sell. Removed 3 canoefulls of lilypads from their pond, and mowed for them.

I hope to get my hands on 3 gal of resin this week, and then get the floor filleted, tabbed, and glassed over. Also, have some off-white pigment and white gel coming from USComp to get the bottom repaired. I hit the front quarter with my new buffer, should compound up well:) With a quart of neutral as well as one of pure white and the pigment, I should be able to match the color well.

I'm planning on a layer of 1708 on the top of the deck, unless someone convinces me that a layer of 6oz cloth is good. It is 1708 on the bottom. Thoughts?

Thanks everyone, have a good week!

tdrudd87,
It is a really good feeling to have a deck in isn't it. The deck really looks good. Nice work.
I plan to tab mine in with 1.5oz CSM then one layer 1.5 oz csm, one layer of 18oz roven and 1.5oz csm to finish it off. At least that's my plan for now.
Once again it looks great.

Bob, it feels awesome! Super solid, even without the top glass. Thanks for the input on the glass, I am leaning towards sticking with the 1708, seems like a similar amount of glass as you will be using, a little less mat.
Thanks again!

my only thoughts on the 1708 would be that you will end up having to sand the surface if you plan to keep just the fiberglass exposed ( Painted ) you wouldn't have to worry nearly as much if you use something that isn't stitched together.

I am planning on a coat of gelcoat rolled on for this year, and then Kiwi or Duraback or snap-in carpet later. See any issues? Does the stitching make it less water resistant? Or just print thru?

Thanks!

I don't know how bad print through would be after it was sanded. I suppose there will be some because the "grain" of 1708 is relatively aggressive. I sanded the 1708 on my transom because I was sick of scraping myself on it getting in and out of the boat and it seems pretty smooth, but I haven't actually LOOKED at it to say for sure. I'll try to pop out today and report back on my findings unless someone else chimes in before then.

Thanks Red. I haven't decided how to address the print thru. May get some veiling mat, or just roll on a little extra resin and sand a bit. On the floor I'm ok with it, may make the rolled gel less slippery.

Re: 16' 1967 Silverline Rambler Restoration

Hey guys, hope everyone had a good weekend.

Not massive amounts of progress, partly because of these guys....
582a6afb.jpg

Not a huge guy, about 13". Caught a handfull of dinks too, all in the backyard!

On to the boat, I got the deck filled on the edges and tabbed in, as well as a seal coat on the whole thing. Used up some fillers I didn't like for the gaps, namely talc and 1/4 fibers. The 1/4 stuff is just too coarse for my taste. I figured the deck edge could use the strength as much as anything. The pics!

Re: 16' 1967 Silverline Rambler Restoration

Next weekend I'm hoping to get the motorwell area tabbed in, and around the transom a bit. Get that feathered smooth and roll the big deck 1708 out. Then it is done!

Then start moving the support cradle to get the bottom gel repaired, and onto the trailer for good. Come on end of the tunnel. Or at least a new tunnel:redface:

Take care,
Terry

Thanks, and for the prod to update the thread. I'll try to get July 4th progress pics up soon:redface:

Don't worry, you'll get there! It's awesome that you went back to do the transom right!

The deck is looking very nice, I'm sure it's as strong as needed plus some.

I have issues with fishing interrupting my progress as well, so I hear ya:D

Hello, I just bought the same boat that you are restoring. Even the same color. It is in decent shape, though it will need to be restored in a few years. I am having trouble finding parts (bimini top). Have you been able to find parts for this model? Thanks and great job with your restoration.
