‘89 150 gear set replacement?

Looking to replace my lower unit gear set due to some ongoing shifting issues. Figured I’d replace all the gears instead of just the shift dog and/or reverse gear. I know oem gears are preferred, but they are cost restrictive for me and quite hard find.
Sierra (18-2217) and GLM (22622) have aftermarket replacements that are less expensive.
1. Are these the correct gear replacements for my engine? ‘89 150stlcem
2. Are one of these manufacturers preferable in quality?
Thanks

What was the shifting issue ?-----Checked the control box and cables ?----Have you checked the gears ?----Have you checked the shift rod height ?-----Checked the cover where shift rod goes into the lower unit ?-----

Reverse grinding, wouldn’t stay in gear.
Checked control box. Replaced both shift and throttle cables. Have not physically checked gears themselves, but would not stay in reverse with cable off and holding/pushing shift linkage towards reverse. Shift rod height was correct. Shift rod seems to slide through housing ok.
Leaning towards worn clutch dog. Haven’t been in there yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if previous owner had reversed the clutch dog due to wear. Just a guess.
Thanks for the help.

If I do find a beat up clutch dog and/or gears, which replacements would you suggest?

Yes. Already had contacted gear pros as an option. Unfortunately my gear set is back ordered by 5 weeks. :(
If I use the same shims with the new gears, will the pinion height not be the same?
If not, the omc shim guage is no where to be found or extremely expensive. Are there other option for setting this height without the specialty tool?

Does SEI offer a replacement gearcase? A whole new gearcase usually costs just a bit more than a set of gears.

A new SEI gear case is about $900. These new gear cases would also require an updated upper drive shaft. This 30 year old engine probably isnt worth that much overall.
Fazt, would love to hear your answer to my pinion height/shim question.
Thanks to everyone as always.

You have to shim new gears.----Using the factory shimming unit ( I have that item ) here.------Called gear pro's some time ago and answer on shimming ( using factory tool ) was not very clear at the time.

No outboard shops around me seem to have this tool, or will even work on these old Johnson’s.
Can it be done without the factory shimming unit?
Do I have another option?

You can swap already shimmed gears into a different housing but have to reshim with new gears. When the back face of pinion is machined it could be several thousands different from original gears..Where are you located??

...reverse gear and got a look at the clutch dog. Doesn’t look too good in my opinion. Reverse gear mating area looks worn too. Anyone agree? Forward gear looks a little beat up as well. Thoughts on just replacing the forward reverse and clutch dog? Leave the old pinion (looks ok?) and don’t worry about the new shim check and spacing.
thoughts?

Pinion and forward usually come as a matched set.-----Note-----This work is not the same as installing new sparkplugs in a motor !!

I know, but I really want it to be that easy ;)
Preferred Gear Pro gears are backordered 5 weeks.
Thoughts on Sierra or GLM gear replacements?

Waiting on my drive shaft socket to remove the pinion gear and pull everything. Should be here later this week. I’ll post updated pics then.
Thanks.
