That is not excessive wear.-----But you should replace it I say.

I thought so too... already ordered one.
Still looking around locally for someone to get a shim measurement for my new pinion gear. Cheapest Omc shim tool I could find is around $300
Any tricks you may know for getting an accurate shim measurement without that tool?

You have lots of time.----Use a substance called -----" Mechanics blue " ----or ---" Permatex 80038 Prussian blue "----To establish proper tooth contact.-----Remember you have to pull up forcefully on the driveshaft when using this stuff.

Wouldn’t you want to push DOWN on the drive shaft to load the gears and get an accurate impression??

It was clearly stated that you pull UP on the driveshaft !!

I am going to be blunt here.----Fitting gears is not the same kind of work as installing sparkplugs.------Agreed find a shop to help you !!

Believe me, plan A is still finding a shop to fit these for me. I’ll only look for a plan B if Ive run out of options.
I just enjoy learning as much as possible about this motor and possible alternative options for moving the job forward.

Q. When torquing the pinion nut to find the shim size with the omc tool, should I use the old nut or the new one? I’ll obviously have to remove it once more to get the drive shaft back into the case when I reinstall. Didn’t want to torque the new nut to measure in the tool, take it off, reinstall and torque again and possibly skew the shim size.

Yes. Finally tracked one down at a marina about an hour away. Plan on taking the drive shaft to him and get the measurement in the shop.

New shims, shift dog and gears installed. New gaskets, lower unit seal kit and water pump in, new gear oil.
Seems to be shifting better by manually pulling the shift shaft. True test will be back on the power head and correctly adjusted shift cable.
I did notice its pretty tough to manually turn the upper driveshaft. (must use my breaker bar with the drive shaft spline nut on top). Is that normal? I assume it’s the friction from the new water pump?
Also, what’s appropriate break in procedure for new gears? Idle only for a few hours?

Who's gears? 1-2 hours with a load is usually good and change oil also.
