85 3.6 V6 OMC stringer poor or no throttle response/bog high altitude when in gear

Flame arrestor was disgusting. Melted away gunk with carb cleaner dip and it's sparkly new now. Improved it by a reasonable amount, but still not back to ideal running condition. I will use a dwell meter and check next. I also will need to replace the fuel filter as it being clogged may also...

85 3.6 V6 OMC stringer poor or no throttle response/bog high altitude when in gear

Hey everyone. I got this boat about a month ago and finally finished doing some large and expensive repairs. When I bought it, it ran great and shifted smooth with good throttle response at sea level. Now at 5k feet where I live, if I shift fwd or reverse it bogs and provides no throttle...

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

Got back to work after a few days off. I went back and forth with how to do the stringers but settled on this method. . Bedded the stringers to the hull with a thickened epoxy (I'm aware of the hard point issue that needs to be avoided). After cutting the kiln dried 2x6 to fit. I used a 40...

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

Alright second lamination is done. Just need to glass it in place then it's on to the stringers . The screws worked really well, but I let it cure a bit to long before removing. Luckily the impact pulled em out without too much trouble with the exception of 2. One broke in half and the other...

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

So today I started the transom patch. I read how to do it for over a week and kept bouncing back in forth with methods...I decided I just need to do it !! I am a little lucky as my stringer drive doesn't contact the transom at all, so the risk is a bit lower if I suck and did it all wrong...but...

    1985 OMC 3.8 v6 exhaust manifold questions

I'm guessing you meant 11/32? I might try the barr manifolds if this weld doesn't work out like I want...I'm thinking the manifold gets to around 160 degrees which really shouldn't give it too much of an issue, but we will see. I'm going to use a propane torch to heat the area to around 2-300...

    1985 OMC 3.8 v6 exhaust manifold questions

Purchased a mig wire specifically made for welding cast iron. Has a lot of good feedback in the miller forums and across the web. Holds up to cast iron exhaust manifolds on vehicles, so the water jacket should be no issue. Its expensive at 50 dollars a pound...but I think the best option is to...

    1985 OMC 3.8 v6 exhaust manifold questions

That would be awesome. I'm going to go in the garage and measure my clearances right now. Already looking into nickel based mig wire to weld the single crack I have. Other side is in good condition. It's 110 dollars for a 2lb spool so not cheap 😐. It is specifically made for welding cast iron...

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

Picked up some kiln dried 2x6 fir and 3/4 marine grade plywood. I'm going to have to place the deck in using two pieces so im brainstorming how to make that happen. The wood is so much better than anything you can get at home depot...costs more too! Little bowing in both marine sheets from...

    1985 OMC 3.8 v6 exhaust manifold questions

Welp, I ordered the Sierra manifold kit that fits the 4.3 and the 3.8 , but for anyone wondering if it fits IT DOES NOT. The bolts line up great, but unless you fab up 3/4 inch spacers and install longer hydraulic motor mount bolts it will not clear the motor mount. It is a real shame because...

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

I thought so too...then after bouncing around online on various free books YouTube builds and forum posts, I found that the only real disadvantage of using it is excess resin absorption. It provides great strength and laminates to the surface more easily (apparently , haven't worked with it...

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

After looking at the boat and deciding what the best method is, I am going to go with a sister joint as discussed-but with structural fiberglass reinforcement using 1708 and epoxy. Epoxy mating surfaces with structural epoxy colloidal silica and utilize stainless fasteners to tighten joint as it...

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

It's a bit odd, this construction. The 2x10 full length stops and continues as a about 2x4.5 inches where the wood is cut currently. The original manufacturer basically cut out an L shape into the stringer and sent that 2x5 ish dimension to the transom. 3 other 2x4 ish size buddy's were then...

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

Alright. A nice weekend with plenty of drinks and food. Back to work! Today I used the grinder and oscillating tool to trim the rest if the lip for the floor and ground out the rest of the fiberglass tabbing leftover from the previous stringers. I used a flap wheel to finish and grind off the...

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

Awesome. Yeah I looked into that board, if my stringer wasn't an active stringer and running the whole length of the boat with that 2x8 I might use foam, but im going to use wood for it for now. I'm still trying to decide how I want to do the engine mounts...as far as the transom I figured it...

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

Alright lip is coming out. First time working on a boat ever so I appreciate the help. The bottom 4 inches of the transom had rot so I cut out the bottom 8 inches to good wood. Bare fiberglass on the bottom 8. Il update with pics later. Planning on cutting out plywood to fit, laminating the two...

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

Alright so I pulled the deck in the rear. Wood was in good condition which made it a pain to get off....after removing it I found that almost all wood around is in excellent condition. My plan to to remove the stringer on both sides as I have with one side already and then create the new motor...

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

Well I decided/was forced to decide to do both rear stringer/motor mounts. After I started drilling the holes on the left and filling them with epoxy, I quickly learned that the bottom of the wood was rotted out as the epoxy would free flow through. I let it set and then cut back some glass to...

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

Hello all. I have another thread about the whole issue I'm going through right now but long story short the portside motor mount stringer area was poorly constructed and had a crack near bottom of bilge. Along with that there was water leaking into the wood through motor mount lag bolt holes...
