Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

They laughed at how clean the top cylinder was and that corresponded with the areas that were way out of tolerance.

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

Been to the machine shop today, they measured it and laughed. Gave me some guidance on what to do. Got a sheet of glass, bonded a flat big sheet of wet and dry 120 grit and re-decked it, all back in tolerance now. New head gaskets on route.

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

Interesting difference in head colour on the cylinders that might be leaking. Middle one passed the feeler gauge test. Top and bottom don’t.

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

Further update. Installed the new impeller and housing - water cooling is now sorted and running a strong pisser out of head and poppet at idle 👍🏻 This has also been useful as it’s highlighted what I believe is the cause of the primary issue. As soon as I installed the new impeller (and water...

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

Hi Dukedog, any ideas what this is, it was spinning round the outside of the water tube that runs up the leg to powerhead. Made of thin aluminium. Looks like it might have been melted and deformed as sat in the flow of exhaust gases below the exhaust defuser. I've connected a hose up the water...

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

Thanks Chris. Latest theory (new coils). Changed things, but didn’t really improve things. It’s bucking when trying to accelerate past 4K RPM’s now, a very defined miss-fire. To rule it out, I’m making a new loom between switch boxes and coils (mine is original and 30yrs old. Could have an...

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

Further update, timing was way out, nearly an 1" off between 25' past TDC and where it needs to be versus where it was set. Hoping that's the final thing now!

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

So got to water test her again today with the new coils - we've made some solid progress. Before it would barely run, now she planes out will run up to 4,000RPM (half throttle) - that's a great improvement. Wouldn't keep running before and had no power. Now she won't pull past 4,000 RPM, falls...

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

Nice, liking that, so if you block off the pee hole coming from the poppet it flows more water through the heads and out of the other pee hole? The way it is set now, just feels like low pressure from the poppet, hardly anything from pee hole from the heads and loads leaving the prop hub. That...

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

I think you could be right.. Just been out and tested the coils with an OHM meter. Of the 6x coils, 4 are in spec, the 5th shows very low reading on the meter and the 6th is dead. Will remove the green wires to the coils and re- test tomorrow to be sure.. I really hope that's the issue, in my...

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

Just pulled the reeds, all look perfect, seal OK and aren't sticking. Also pulled and checked the flywheel magnets - all good there.

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

Hi Chris, Not checked the flywheel magnets in fairness, will pull and check that, easy thing to do. It runs a little better with the new parts (CDI Stator and Trigger) House water pressure is really high Interestingly, it clears up a little if you pump the primer bulb, but remains flat /...

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

UPDATE - so managed to water test it again yesterday. Still wont pick up in the water, it bogs. Took this video as we sprayed starter fluid into the intake and feathered the throttle to keep it running (no change, it doesn't pickup) Updated list up things I've replaced and done below: Carbs...

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

Thanks Chris, yep done filter and link/sync. Didnt know you could richen the carbs up on these, outside of jet changes. Would it pick up on the starter fluid if it was lean though?

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

Thanks Chris, this is the XR2 race motor which doesn't have any thermostats or poppet valve. I cant find an idle relief valve on the parts schematic for my motor - can you see it? https://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury/oem-parts/race-outboard/1997/1920511th?filter=

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

Its on the trailer, partially submerged, with prop in the water, but offshore mid clear of the water. Runs under load like that. Big rooster.. Good shout on the reeds, not checked those, that said there is no blow back through the carbs.

Mercury V6 XR2 - Does this Stator looks bad?

OK so managed to water test it again just now, still wont pick up in the water, as soon as its in the water and the offshore mid exhaust is under water it bogs. If its out of the water (trimmed up) it picks up under load. On the hose its no problem, revs crisp and clean on all six. It looks like...
