Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

Our workshop is about 24x36, with two garage doors on one end, 10' ceiling. There is a layer of spray foam in the walls and ceiling. I've got an old 230v construction heater kicking around. I think I need to wire up a different plug so it will connect to my welder receptacle. Should add that...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

Thanks. All the boats I see sitting in our lakes end up with a brownish tint below the waterline due to tannins and/or algae in the water. I'm not worried about those issues. I agree, that would be nice. I'll need to keep an eye on weather. I'm near Toronto, and winter is on its way, so I...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

Time for a picture update! Exterior layers of paint stripped off all but bottom. As this boat will remain in the lake all summer, and tented beside the cottage all winter, I'm questioning whether to bother any further paint removal work on the bottom, as it will never be visible. One thought...

Paint recommendations - fresh water, marina slip

The old fella I bought it from painted the boat with his grandkids using what appears to be house paint. There's at least three coats overtop, which I've now removed. During that stripping adventure, the base coat came off in different areas. I may leave the bottom areas, but acid-etch, and...

Paint recommendations - fresh water, marina slip

jd - thanks, will review your thread for more info. Bummer to hear the delays in shipment for those paints. Hopefully I can find some stock nearby. Scott - aluminum hull, like the old Starcraft SS16. I'm in the paint stripping phase, currently, trying to figure out what's the best step moving...

cc - thx, good to know. I'll be re-wiring the boat when reassembly begins, and will keep a close eye on best practices there.

Paint recommendations - fresh water, marina slip

I'm working on an old 16 ft boat similar to the Starcraft SS16, and have been mulling over paint options. I have some limited auto body repair/paint experience, but am green with marine ;-). I have read woodonglass's excellent summary here, but it states for 'trailer queen only'. What are...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

cc - not sure on the shore power - would that just be for battery charging in a boat this size? It was a cottage boat, sitting in fresh water 6 months/yr, and the corrosion appears to follow the waterline, but almost exclusively near the stern. I'll clean the area with vinegar/water once the...

Surprisingly not bad. Much more pleasant than the 'Circa 1850' product from HomeHardware. It also doesn't evaporate nearly as quickly, staying wet and soft 24 hrs after application.

For those Canadians looking for paint stripper recommendations, here's what I found works well: https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/solvable-contractor-strength-heavy-duty-stripper-0492589p.html#srp

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

Paint stripping is well underway. This job might be worse than removing water-logged foam! I tried a few strippers, and wasn't having much luck. Then I tried a container of Solvable Heavy Duty Stripper I picked up at the ReStore (Habitat for Humanity). That stuff works very well, even in the...

Thanks for info. Did that brand get bought out by Princecraft? That's what I was told by a guy, and might be why the previous owner put the Princecraft decals on the boat.

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

Thanks for the advice! I'm sure these questions must get repetitious, as I continue to uncover similar discussions in the other project threads. I'll take a close look behind the knee brace. It was bolted through the transom with mild steel 1/4" bolts, so there may be surprises waiting. I am...

Above is that hole mentioned earlier, after sanding the area a bit. There are some very minor spots in the area, but nothing else of this size. Each bay between ribs has spots of discolouration that appear to be corrosion in the initial stages. I've scraped at them with a pick, and all...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

OK, so I've got the transom stripped of paint, and have found a few small corrosion spots, but nothing major. I also put on the reading glasses, and sanded between ribs inside the hull, where the foam was extracted. There are numerous small shallow spots of corrosion. I thought at first these...

    Filter screen above bilge well?

Thanks for the info. I was in the store the other day looking at kitchen sieves. I have seen others using the aluminum screening around the bilge pump, but I'd like to keep the crap from falling down in there in the first place.

cc - very interesting videos! I've put an order in for the G-Flex. Hope to get to that job some time next week. BTW, amazing restoration thread you have going there. I'm trying to work through a number of related threads here on iboats, and the amount of information is overwhelming!

Here's the source of that leak in the floor near the transom. There is some pitting spots under where the battery was located. This one pit has penetrated the hull completely. The whole crater looks to be about 3/16" diameter. I'm thinking I'll drill it out and put a closed-end pop-rivet in...

OK, I'm researching these sealing options, as that seems to be on the critical path for this project. Would you be able to expand on why you prefer the G-Flex? I'm looking at all three now, and wondering about sealing abilities, low temperature application, etc. Also, what's the recommended...
