    Carb advice, please.

That's not getting into the fuel bowl and jets in the carb where the sediment will be, you will be wasting your time. Watch these couple of videos:

    Carb advice, please.

Ethanol gas is what does it. It's when it's allowed to sit, and separate, and cause corrosion. Run non ethanol gas, and you won't have problems with the fuel system. The gas tank in your boat is vented, the gas tank in a car is sealed, and that makes a difference why cars don't have problems...

    3.7 mercrusier 165 horse engine

Yes there are, and it sounds like what he has. Some older inboard engines ran opposite rotation when there were twins. All sterndrive engines turn the same as automotive.

    3.7 mercrusier 165 horse engine

That's what it sounds like. The starter should be a CW starter, and the engine is CCW. Here is a link to a page from Arco marine, who makes electrical components, to help determine which you have there. The wear on the starter gear should be on the left side of the gear for a CW starter...

    3.7 mercrusier 165 horse engine

In order for us to help advise you, we need to know what that engine is connected to, between it, and the propeller. Using Achris' photo, what set up do you have? It is not an outboard.

    3.7 mercrusier 165 horse engine

Engine rotation is determined by observing flywheel rotation from the rear of the engine looking forward. Propeller rotation is not necessarily the same as engine rotation. This engine will be/should be a left hand rotation. The Distributor rotation will be clockwise looking top down with...

    Push rod

You could take one of the other pushrods off, and use it in the bent rods place just to measure the clearance, and see if the same size will work in that cylinder.

Question about whether to leave boat in drive or not

My 15 hp Mercury 4 stroke manual recommends putting it in forward when trailering to prevent the prop from spinning freely. Will it cause any damage if left to spin in the wind, I doubt it, but that is what it says. I would not put my sterndrive in gear while trailering or left sitting on the...

Replaced rubber impeller now won't shift to neutral??

No... It won't work right. They both have to be in forward.

Replaced rubber impeller now won't shift to neutral??

Since you left the upper half bolted up still, have the shifter in the boat in forward gear. Look in the front of the drive you will see the shift shaft I'm referring to... It should be pointing straight ahead. The splined shift shaft on the lower half gets rotated clockwise while turning the...

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

Better than a fuel pressure gauge, is a fuel pressure/vacuum gauge. Something like a Craftsman 282179, which is an old part. You can put the gauge before the pump also and it will show a restriction with increased vacuum.

    Alignment help!

The term stern refers to the back of the boat not the drive. You could use the terms: sterndrive, drive, outdrive to refer to the drive. Your drive should be a MC-1 model. There should be a round lift ring built into the top cover of the drive.

Change Trans Fluid on a 1978 470 MerCruiser

Your outdrive model is called a MC-1. It was made before the Alpha One drive, many call it a pre-Alpha, but there were a few models before the Alpha One so the correct name is best. I have an MC-1 as a spare, and have some photos of where the serial number would be. The engine should have a...

Change Trans Fluid on a 1978 470 MerCruiser

I cut the side out of a gallon sized Prestone antifreeze container, and squeeze it under the drain plug, and drain mine by gravity, it just fits. There is no transmission. It should be bolted to an outdrive as I don't think the 470/3.7's were used on inboards. What's the serial number of the...
