    Thru hull

If I understand you correctly, you have a hole that needs to be enlarged to accommodate a new transducer and you want to know what to seal it with?? Above waterline you can use almost anything.Silicone,4200,etc. A flexible is best.Marinetex would be a good choice to fill a hole completely.Charlie

    McGuire's one step compound

You def need to apply wax or polish after the compounding.since you have already had oxidation issues ,I would apply something like Maguire's cleaner/polish and finish with a quality wax like Mothers pure wax. "Any wax is better than no wax".... Charlie

Thinner for bottom paint, what to use??

I used to.....but have not bought a quality brush worthy of cleaning in a long time. I came across a can of Penetrol which is specifically for varnish and paint thinning I may try.It is not quick drying which makes brushing better....so it states.Charlie

    1986 Mercruiser 260 Advice

Your drive is not a "PreAlpha" as you originally stated so stick with your original plan. The pre alpha drive has a small loop ring on the top plate and smaller upper with ridge lines on the sides of the upper.Easy to tell the difference. as I previously stated re oil ,dont use a synthetic or...

    1986 Mercruiser 260 Advice

I would recommend that before you rebuild a pre alpha drive, you should consider replacing it with an Alpha one drive which is a direct replacement and a much better drive unit.An Alpha drive takes just over a quart of gear lube 90 weight marine.Filled thru the lower drain plug on the drive...

5.0xl/V8 mer. Where do I start?

I would not take on a project like replacing stringers.Personally I would pull the motor and put it for sale if all checks out good.Prob get 2-$3000 for a good V8.The drive also looks pretty clean probably another $1000 and give the rest away for free or scrap it.Now you should have a wallet...

    Sealant or no Sealant?

Dry gaskets are recommended for the simple reason that when sealant is applied ,it is usually over applied and when tightening down it will squeeze into the passageways and cause restrictions. This is why manufacturers recommend dry.I use aerosol Hi-tack which will get you the seal you want and...
