Advice on transom , stringers and floor rebuild

I think you could use 1/2" but I used 1/4" and it worked great, from the reading I've done it seems most people use 1/4". As far as milled fibers I used 1/32" to make my hull and deck putty but as far as transom install with it I'll let someone with more experience answer that part 😊

    88 Capri Restoration (Splashed 08/2022)

That's ok. I really appreciate your response to my question because it certainly gives me options I wasn't aware of. With the blisters you mentioned and how the moisture may have worked its way through the paint do you think this could be a shortcoming of the type of paint? I want to do it...

    88 Capri Restoration (Splashed 08/2022)

Good morning everyone, I'm getting ready to "knotch" the transom for the drive steering arm and wondered if there were any tricks. I have a 1-3/4" hole saw and was going to mount it and whittle away accordingly and of course I didn't take measurements of that 😔. Thanks, Jim

Advice on transom , stringers and floor rebuild

I tabbed my transom first and worked forward. I had everything laid in with PB prior to tabbing. When it came to stringers and bulkheads I did them at the same time working from the transom forward. I removed my ski locker as personal preference but as others stated they kept theirs.

    Hope outboard ain't too heavt

With you commenting like you are you sound concerned or possibly anyway. Taking a chance without solid knowledge could lead to tradegy so maybe instead of "time will tell" maybe get some sound advice first before taking a chance?

    Internal Restive Coil

Hi all, After reading another thread I wanted to ask if I went to an internal restive coil would that eliminate the need for a ballast or resistor wire that my 88 Capri 2.3 had. The restive wire is partially missing and if I'm not mistaken they had specific lengths. Thanks 😊

    88 Capri Restoration (Splashed 08/2022)

Well May has been so Topsy turvy with high temperatures in the low 40's so nothing done 😞. Next week will be good temperature wise so with having some days off during that time it looks good to get started again even though it'll be in and out of the garage.

Advice on transom , stringers and floor rebuild

The mat doesn't really offer strength. I am using 1708 bi-axial with poly resin which has a layer of mat on the back so no real need for additional mat in layering. I used the may to basically waterproof areas of the boat that didn't need additional strength like my seat boxes etc.

HELP! 1988 4.3 omc had water in the oil.

Hi there. Well water in the oil means there could be a crack in the block somewhere and I only say this because of the results from the cooling system leak down test and exhaust manifold cracks which could be from improper winterizing. When you said the oil was fine in the replacement engine, do...

Determining Whether or not to Rebuild 1990 17' Larson

I've been working on mine for 2 years but granted I live up north with a garage that is too small so my work time is limited. Either way taking ones time without a time-line is best because of unexpected delays etc. The best I can figure I will be in the 6k range when she is water ready...

Determining Whether or not to Rebuild 1990 17' Larson

I am in my second year rebuilding mine (during the warmer months) and with the issues visible there are many that aren't. It is a time intensive job but at least you can spread the cost out compared to having a boat payment. I asked myself a couple of questions many times which lead me to do...

    Floor and Transom Rebuild

I used titebond glue between them and lots of screws to hold it together while drying. Once dry I drilled 1/2" holes through the wood before PB'ing to the transom which allows the PB to ooze out the hole allowing a tighter bond to the hull while adding more contact surface for the PB to grab on...

    88 Capri Restoration (Splashed 08/2022)

I finally reached out to the local transfer station and it would cost somewhere around 500 which tells me they don't want them and that was totally gutted. I haven't given up on my project but the blasted upstate NY weather won't cooperate!

    Floor and Transom Rebuild

I used 3/4" exterior grade plywood for everything.....stringers, transom and floor. All wood must be encapsulated (coated with resin and csm) or at bare minimum with a couple coats of resin. You need to remove all wood residue as well as gelcoat to get down to clean fiberglass otherwise you...
