Fuel gauge issue not working with new sending unit

ok. having just had to replace both my gauge and the sender, there appear to be two different ohm ranges for the sender/gauge. 240-33 ohm and 0-190 ohm. obviously the two need to be on the same "system" in order to work right. Possibly a mismatched gauge/sender set is the issue?

    Restoring 1988 Doral Bowrider

opinions will vary, but the general consensus on this board is to start with CSM, and then 2 layers of 1708 over that, going about 6" out from the stringers on either side (at least). if you are using 3/4 ply for the stringers, you will play hell getting any of that to wrap up and over the...

SCREW HOLES STRIPPED OUT IN FIBER GLASS FLOOR OF BOAT..

the fiberglass is (or was) over something. Usually plywood. You will want to seal the holes, and either re-drill in the same locations, or seal the holes and move the screws to a new location. Do not just use longer screws The deck is typically only 1/2 inch plywood under the glass. Longer...

    1998 5.7 srartup

if its the original engine, its 24 years old. Not unusual for the seals to have become plasticized in that timeframe, and are no longer up to the job at hand. If the engine otherwise runs good, and shows minimal other signs of age, it wouldnt bother me, as long as the price reflects the...

Mercruiser 470 crankshaft sprocket play on shaft

awesome news. makes the repair a LOT easier and cheaper. Hopefully the root cause was just a poorly heat treated crank gear allowing the keyway to waller out

    1998 5.7 srartup

appears to be bluish in color, if it did it after sitting for a month, you could be starting to get leaky valve stem seals/guides (some have seals, most do not). if the engine is otherwise healthy, its more a nuisance than a problem at this point.

SCREW HOLES STRIPPED OUT IN FIBER GLASS FLOOR OF BOAT..

what attaches to those holes..... that is the more important question. I wouldnt go with longer screws, as if there is nothing below the deck where the screws are going, it serves no purpose other than creating a hole in the underside of the deck which WILL allow water in over time to rot said...

New Starter turns on when battery is connected

chevy style starter, so if the large diameter battery terminal is in any way touching the bottom connection (that goes into the back of the starter) on the solenoid, the motor will run, but the bendix gear will not be extended. If the two are not bridged, the solenoid is fried internally. The...

Please HELP! Am I being overcharged for Presale Inspection, Service, etc 2016 Cobalt R3?

I think what Racerone is getting at is that the marina doesnt try to take the boat via mechanics lien for unpaid invoice on the work done. Tread carefully here.

    1995 7.4 Thunderbolt starting

just like with everything else, some can and will be a bit more recalcitrant than others. If it becomes an issue, or gets progressively worse, then is when I would start looking at the electrical side of the house. Make sure ALL connectors are clean and tight, ensure that you have good grounds...

4000ft Above Sea Level Carb Settings 4.3 Merc

without knowing what is currently in the carb, its difficult to know how or if you will need to rejet. Best option would be to run it, and see how rich its currently running at that altitude. My GUESS is that you will need to go one to two jet sizes smaller, but only running it will find out for...

Merc 350 sputters, dies, won't restart after heating up

my background is in automotive. Any in tank filter on the end of the pickup has been called a sock for as long as I can remember (better than 30 years at least). Most of us also realize that these engines have been "modified" with marine equipment, but their parentage is undeniable. While its...

    Merc/GM 4.3 tops out at 4000 rpm

Ill also say the compression is crap. Not so much the ultimate value, but the spread between cylinders is excessive. You typically want to see no more than 10% between high and low cylinders. yours are much more than that. Time to start looking at a long block

Mercruiser 470 crankshaft sprocket play on shaft

yeah, obviously you will want to change that. You will also want to replace the crankshaft key, as that is probably eaten up as well. With any luck, there is no appreciable wear on the crank snout from the sprocket going back and forth while eating out the keyway. If there is, well, there goes...

    Winterize

owner may have no legal responsibility, but it isnt the tech with a busted boat getting towed back to shore either. Not saying you need to do a full on inspection of the equipment, but a good working knowledge of your craft is NOT a bad idea. Just handing over cubic dollars and trusting a...

Trying to decide between 3 older boats!

being a frequent buyer of old boats that are in need of a LOT of work (and money....) If I were serious about any of the boats, I would look at them in this order 1) Chris Craft... Known name recognition and at least a "reputation" for being high end. May or may not actually be, but if you need...

Mercruiser 470 crankshaft sprocket play on shaft

is the slop in the fit of the gear/sprocket on the crank snout, or is it the chain slapping? there should be no appreciable slop between the crank snout and the gear/sprocket. If there is, it WILL wear into the crank rendering it pretty much useless. Not to mention the cam timing will be all...

    17 oz 45 deg. bias

cant speak about the glass cloth, but I have used the Bondo resin a couple of times (using it on my current project). Have not had any issues getting a good bond with older glass when adding or repairing in my boats. No mention of wax, but I would not bet against it, there is no tack at all when...

7.4mpi just started running rough and with gas coming out exhaust

I think I would have to agree with you. IIRC, most of the ECU's out there control the GROUND side of the injectors, so current is not running through the ecu. If you have one side of the injectors "off" and the other side is "on" either you have the extremely bad luck of catching it right at the...

    converting from ammeter to voltmeter

thats about what I thought. plan right now is to leave the engine side of the harness intact, as designed and built by Mercruiser. Its still wrapped and in great pristine condition. No sense cutting into this. The boat side of the cannon plug is already loose wire. I will take the orange lead...
