    Lowering outdrive?

I just picked up an old Lund with a Mercruiser sterndrive. The drive is in the up position and I want to lower it for the winter so it does not get water in the lower unit. There is no key. I know that I can hook up a battery and jump the solenoid to make it move but can anyone steer me in this...

    Mercruiser inline 4 and 6?

What is the word on the Mercruiser inline 4 and 6 cylinder engines? I see a couple of boats that interest me locally. One has an inline 6 - a 22ft Starcraft Islander and the other has a 135HP 4 cylinder in an 18 ft Starcraft. Did I see something on here suggesting it is becoming more difficult...

    Opinion on old Volvo?

I see advertised locally, a "Volvo 1700 straight 6 engine with a 270 drive" (in a boat). Price appears reasonable by local standards. Boat looks pretty good in the photos and on a decent trailer. Any opinions? I assume it is fairly old as the photos show the prop as being the style that does...

    Intake manifolds

What is the most common sort of intake manifold on a small block chevy v8 in an i/o? Single plane, dual plane etc. Do the same sort of principles apply as in an auto engine? Normally the dual plane intakes are better at lower rpm in a street car. My reason for asking is that I am collecting...

    Rev Limiter?

I just read the thread with the link to outdrive failure detection and it made me wonder what would happen to the engine if the drive shaft broke. One would exepect the engine to rev up when the load was removed and that there might be damage before the operator was able to back off the...

    4 bolt mains?

Do any of the factory small block engines commonly used in I/O's have 4 bolt mains? If not, is it worth looking for such a block when replacing the original? Appears to me that it would offer a bit more support to the crank. A marine engine will most likely run at a higher rpm than most car or...

folding tongue with hydraulic surge brakes?

Is there any reason why I cannot add a folding tongue kit to my trailer that has hydraulic surge brakes? I assume I could use a rubber flex hose to connect the lines on either side of the hinge and it should work fine. Anyone out there done it? Or seen a factory setup? Randy

    Weight?

Anyone have any idea what a Slickcraft SS215 might weigh? It is a 1971 model - fiberglass - 21 1/2 feet long with the 225 HP small block GM engine and the OMC stringer outdrive. I am just trying to ensure I have sufficient trailer under it. Randy

    old boat trailer info?

Anyone know an online source of information on older boat trailers? I just acquired a 1972 EZ Loader 20T. A dual axle roller trailer. The seller gave me a couple of extra pieces of square tubing that apparently belong to it but I have yet to figure out what they might be for. Maybe part of the...

    Let's talk fuel economy

So, how close to boats emulate cars and trucks? How much difference do size, weight and engine size make for fuel economy in a boat? If I find a 18 to 22 foot aluminum boat with a 4 cylinder I/O, am I going to see much better fuel economy than I will with a similar sized boat made of glass with...

    288 Mercruiser??

I have been looking at an advertisement for a boat and asking questions of the owner by email but he does not appear to be knowledgeable. He describes it as an early 80's 288 HP Mercruiser but has not answered questions about the motor or outdrive. So, anyone got good guesses about what this...

    Swap candidate?

So, let me know what you think. Is a 302 Ford with a Mercruiser 888 drive worth considering to replace an OMC electric shift stringer with a bad 307? It is momentarily the only thing I have found locally that might suffice. I can have the whole boat for a fairly reasonable price. I am told the...

    Painting?

Anyone with opinions on painting fibreglass hulls? I sort of assume most folks prefer to leave the original gelcoat alone if possible but substantial repairs and change of color sort of dictate something further. One would then think that paint is the most logical choice. Sand a bit and roll...

    1972 Slickcraft with OMC stringer

OK, if I did the correctly, you folks should see the photo above. I acquired this boat and trailer in September 2008. It has some issues which I will go into further below as I have some questions to pose to you folks. The boat and trailer were given to us by friends who have owned it...
