    self bailing?

Anyone have any thoughts about making an old aluminum boat with an I/O self bailing? The boat is an old 20 foot Lund with a 165 inline 6 Mercruiser. I need to do the floor anyway so I keep thinking about lifting the floor enough to make it self bailing. There would need to be a lip around the...

Plug in leading edge side of the upper drive part of the leg - old Stringer drive

Ok, so there is a red plastic plug in the front side of the upper leg. It covers up a grease nipple used to lube the swivel joint. Mine is crumbling and if I get it out, it will be in pieces. Is there any harm in running it without the plug? I don't mind getting a new plug but I am not going...

    Stringer outdrive leg Qs

Again, 1973 OMC Stringer attached to a 3.0 140HP 4 cylinder engine. The upper chamber on the outdrive leg has a top plug and a drain plug. In the manual the photo shows the upper one having a dipstick. Mine does not have the dipstick. How much fluid should there be in that resevoir? I am...

    Trim Q again

1973 OMC Stringer and 3.0 140 Hp engine with trim setup. Goes down when I push the switch down but only clicks when I push the switch up. On the engine under the manifolds, are 4 solenoids. I am assuming 2 relate to the tilt and 2 to the trim. Anyone know off hand which are for the trim and...

    Fluids in stringer outdrive leg

I seem to recall reading somewhere that one could use normal gear oil in the upper part of the leg and in the intermediate housing. I know type C is needed in the lower unit to ensure that the electric shift will function properly, but is there any reason that it needs to be used in the upper?

    OMC Stringer transom seal replacement?

Got the new seal and got the old one off. What should I use as a sealant between the seal and the intermediate housing? I assume a bit of RTV gasket maker or similar would be fine to seal the rubber seal to the transom but is the seal glued to the intermediate housing to prevent if from coming...

    Stringer Trim issue

1973 Starcraft Holiday 18 with 140 HP Stringer. Trim motor will lower the front of the engine but I just hear a click when I try to raise it back up. I am assuming that if the motor runs in one direction, there is not likely anything wrong with the motor. Any advice on where to look first?

Water pump kit on a stringer?

I have ordered a kit for the water pump on a 1973 140 HP Stringer. I had a look at a manual that suggests one should check out the swivel housing and water pipe while one has it apart for the water pump. I have not done one of these before. Are there other gaskets or o-rings etc that would be...

    plastic washers in distributor?

Do the black plastic washers on the 2 screws that hold the plate to the housing have any purpose apart from helping to locate the cap? Do they serve any purpose as insulators? Mine are broken and I re-assembled it without them but I have yet to put the distributor back in the boat and could...

Rochester 2bbl on 165 inline Question on rebuild

I am finishing up a rebuild on the carb from my 1974 Mercruiser 165 HP inline 6. Basic Rochester 2 bbl. There are 2 small metal balls that belong in it. One is larger than the other. One belongs in the bottom of the pump discharge under the venturi cluster assembly. Drop it in, put the spring...

    Paint the carb?

I have been rebuilding the carb from my inline 6 Mercruiser engine. I soaked it in carb cleaner and most of the black paint was removed in the process. Is there any advantage to repainting it black or is that just an image thing? I only run on fresh water so I assume I don't need to worry much...

    Painting the hull

I have a 20 foot aluminum boat with a 6 cylinder Mercruiser engine. I am going to want to paint the whole hull shortly. Anyone with experience who can explain how they managed to do it? I am assuming I need to get it off of the trailer and support it in some manner so that I can work on the...

    pfd - life jacket

I am posting this here because it does not appear that many of you folks read the safety section of the forum. What I would like to know is if anyone knows of a comfortable life jacket that would keep an unconscious person afloat with their head out of the water? The old theory was that it...

    2nd Q re 165 HP inline 6 distributor

The new points that I put in match the old ones that I took out but they do not appear to be the right points for the distributor. The were ordered online from a supplier of Mercruiser parts so I assume they are the ones that are now available. They appear to be ok in the sense that they open...

Q are distributor on 165 HP inline 6

I am working on getting a 1974 Lund with Mercruiser 165 HP inline 6 up and running. The wire from the coil to the distributor had lost most of the plastic insulation so I pulled it apart and put a new wire in along with new points and condensor. The plate on which the points etc mount has 2...

    Distributor Q - 1974 165 HP inline 6

I am working on a boat that I am told has not run in 20 years or more. I put new plugs in last weekend and hooked up to fresh fuel and gave it a try but it would not fire. I looked more closely at the distributor and noticed that the wire from the coil was almost devoid of plastic insulation. I...

1978 70HP Johnson bogging on takeoff

My son's 70 HP is acting up this weekend. It starts normally and it runs fine at higher speeds. It wants to stall when one shifts to forward and gives it some throttle. Moving the throttle back and forth seems to keep it going until it takes off and then it is good until you slow down again...

    Aluminum vs SS props?????

"... there were some minor dings on my stainless steel prop. I checked the runout on the shaft to see if it was bent and it checked out okay, and then I installed an aluminum prop..... Why on earth have you put an aluminium prop on???? If you think it will 'save' the drive if you hit something...
