Been a while since we've had an oil thread

so something with a bit of a radius is to all intents and purpose a flat tappet ( rocker , follower ). I have only ever commissioned 2 sbc type cam/ lifter set up and both were fairly ( .530" lift and 270° @ .050 duration ) lumpy and I used a lower than spec valve spring to run them for the...

:) What do you guys call a flat tappet lifter ? To me thats only the old sbc lifter style of thing , but I also have a few motors with the ohc rockers/ followers that have 2 - 3 inches of radius on the contact pad . The 2l pinto motor is notorious for chewing these out ....like if you...

Just thought I'd share a nice photo.

Oil, Yeah I think some of the old boys dont realise things have changed since the war . Petrol was $3.91 a litre at Wanaka yesterday .....not much you can do about it . We dont drive around for the hell of it , we used to , but if we want to go somewhere for a reason we still do . Old...

Just thought I'd share a nice photo.

yeah , that looks better than the blustery places I had this (labour ) weekend . Lakes Wakatipu , Wanaka and Hawea were all real windy until about 6pm. My Parents live in Wanaka so we had to go past the Lakes Wakatipu ( thats Queenstown ) and Wanaka and to escape my (just think what the...

I didnt even watch the vid . My motorbikes ( Ducati )is doing 5000ish rpm at the speed limit ......ah ........ , any halfway decent high performance engine oil can hold up to sustained high rpm , thats exactly what they are made for....thats why they are called high performance as opposed to...

    Trail Cam pix......

Looks like a real nice place Joe . 😁 My measure of a good spot was being able to shoot critters out the toilet window . My Dad actually got a big brass ship porthole built into his Queenstown stone (a local schist rock ) house wall so he could shoot rabbits outa his vegie garden while he was...

No , I didnt , I think that largely bollocks that Outboard manufacturers tell you to get you to buy their overpriced oil . I drive my cars in the rain ,I ride my quad thru 2 feet of water and dont have issues with humidity inside my motors ....as for foaming ...news to me ...Ive never seen...

Been a while since we've had an oil thread

Well my take on that is that Mercury , Honda etc dont make oil , they get something that meets their standards , wether they just grab something off the shelf or get a refinery to make something to their spec ...whatev , then they stick their label on it. You can be sure that branded oil is...

    1990 Force L drive 85hp 90 psi on compression

If it is 90ish Id say to low , these things should have 125 for a good used motor and 150 new . It might have go a bit rusty in there ,rings may have stuck to the pistons or it might have been a bit tired when put away 25 years ago . Have a look at the bores for rust but my money is on it...

    1992 Force 70 Abruptly dies

Sounds to me like you need to have another go at cleaning the carb , particularly the idle and transition orifices and air bleeds . You really need to poke out all the orifices ...bit of thick fishing nylon or a bristle off a brush ,and blast out all the holes with aerosol carb cleaner or...

Fuel leaking out of the throttle (butterfly) shaft

Yes I know that , at no point did I suggest that a loose throttle shaft was causing the leak

Yeah , my Mrs can be a bit of a tyrant too :LOL: but seriously my Mothers porridge was like lumpy spew ........and it only got worse as it cooled , but if we ( 3 boys ) held off long enough we eventually had to go to school. My Dad made our dining table ( did not to bad a job .....for a...

    Discoloration on outboard

almost looks like quite a bit of fuel ( or oil ) has maybe leaked out of the motor and run down the inside of the upper cowl then out down over the mid section and sat on the surface of the water , as there is some lesser damage to other parts of the motor....even the transom has similar...
