Where were you 25 years ago today.

Gee, I had gone on a 24 hour tuna trip the day before. I was sleeping in my bed when the first plane hit. Wifey woke me up at that time and I saw the second plane hit. I assured Wifey that our son was safe at school, since Bayville, NJ was not a high value target, like the terrorist's...

Sylvan Swim Ladder Strap Replacement - Cant find this exact setup?

Gee Scott, IMO anyone with a hammer, snap kit, a scissor and a piece of web strap can make that strap. I made a set of straps like that, only longer, stretched over a ridge pole, to hold up my winter cover. They snap to the boat gunwales.

    No tach,no charging

You can also, disconnect the yellow wires and run the motor on a flusher and look for AC voltage on the two yellow wires. I would expect 100VAC or less, so start with the meter set to a high AC scale.

    No tach,no charging

Check for a fuse in the charging circuit. I don't expect one, but some Mercs had 'em in the wiring connectors. Make sure the tach is not shorted to ground. Then Ohm out the stator across the two yellow wires. Stator should be .18 - .45 ohms, so not a dead short.

    No tach,no charging

You can get replacement VRs both OEM and aftermarket. I think I installed the Sierra or CDI brand. They work just fine.

    No tach,no charging

That is a voltage regulator. Likely a 20A version. Replace with the same. This is a rectifier. It is simply a bridge of 4 diodes. The connections are 2 AC terminals that go to yellow. The grey tach signal wire also connects to one of the AC terminals. The + terminal gets the red wire...

    safety chain question

Some carabineers look strong, but are real wimpy. If you want it strong get a shackle.

Sylvan Swim Ladder Strap Replacement - Cant find this exact setup?

Remember get nylon strapping. Polyester strapping will last one season only.

    No tach,no charging

According to Crowley, lower serial numbers of that motor have a unregulated charging system consisting of a stator and rectifier. Higher serial numbers have a stator and voltage rectifier. Stators are usually tough enough to easily survive rectifier burning. Usually there are 2 yellow wires...

Mercury 50 1977 exsaust palte question

The exhaust baffle can get warped and allow water into the cylinders. You can try to sand them flatter, to some extent. Marine silicone on the gaskets can be a last resort. The good news is that the gaskets for the exhaust cover and baffle are avail...

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

Reed blocks on the inline Mercs were placed between cylinders. The reed blocks had petals on each side allowing air/fuel to pass into each cylinder's crankcase. The reed blocks also had concentric rings of aluminum on the parts that ringed the crankshaft. These acted as seals between the...

Sylvan Swim Ladder Strap Replacement - Cant find this exact setup?

Gee, a piece of web strap (Nylon, not polyester), and a couple of ss snaps should do it. Amazon should have both for short $.

    Boat doesn't rise. Prop issue?

You want to trim up until the prop ventilates and then down a bit until she bites the water. A lot of motors will only trim up a specified amount, before stopping. Sometimes this can be adjusted.

    Boat doesn't rise. Prop issue?

There are at least three reasons for low or no bow rise. The first is a hook in the hull. The hook will deflect water downward at the stern, lifting it and pushing the bow down. The second reason is some sort of appliance at the stern, again deflecting water downward at the stern. Does the...

    Tilt/trim problem

Is the release valve tight? If so, a leak past the piston seal would cause that, but i would need to be a pretty bad leak.

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

I assume you tested for power at the #2 coil primary? A standard voltmeter may not show the quick pulse that fires the coil. You might swap coils and see if spark returns to #2. If so, replace the coil. If not the stator or CDI unit is likely bad. There should be ohm specs for the stator.

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

Gee, how do you define "Support for Johnson/evinrude"? They have been out of business for a long time. Dealerships are closed. Parts are avail via mail order. Mercury is still in business. Dealers will tease you for having an old motor, but will mostly help.

15hp gamefisher wiring diagram? model 225.581508

A lot of wiring diagrams for different engines are pretty similar. Maybe you can get an idea how yours is wired. Are you sure it is a Force/Chrysler? A lot of the Gamefishers were Eska or Tecumseh, and some were Johnny's.

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

Check the engine wiring harness, especially the quick disconnect plug. Look for insulation that is falling off. I would expect ign and carb parts to be avail, as well as normal maintenance stuff.
