Thanks everyone! ‘84 115 TOP rebuild going!

There are multiple carb inlet needles, seats and washers, that are close in size and fit different engines. These inlet needles are the correct diameter but can be longer or shorter than what your engine should use. Also, not all inlet seats use washers under them. I once had a Mercury...

Odd points system on a 1946 Firestone 3.6 hp outboard

I think there were other points systems like that. Maybe old Mercury's? The question is "Does it work"? I presume it does not need a condenser. Also, the Johnnyrude V4 battery and magneto distributor motors had one coil, one condenser and 2 sets of points. The cam lobe was set up to open...

    1976 Mercruiser 351W Oil Pan

I believe windage trays are a much newer engine feature. I think they were invented to save fuel by not having the engine waste energy splashing the oil in the pan.

    1976 Mercruiser 351W Oil Pan

You imply that the oil pan had been leaking due to too much crowbar use on the sealing surface? Gee, I hope new gaskets will fix that leak, but I am skeptical.

2016 Yamaha F150 blowing exhaust out of leg

Yes I think Yamaha cylinder heads should not rot out. There are thousands of much older Johnnyrudes and Mercs that do not have that issue. The early 60's Johnnyrudes even recommended you not flush them after saltwater use. I think Yamaha should use more durable aluminum alloys, like OMC...

    putting her to bed

Gee, then either they are not treated, which is unusual, or they have some other issue. When I cover my boats, I use a ridge pole. That allows wind-powered flow-thru ventilation, even if the covers do not have vents. They are bone dry in the spring, and all winter. I am not sure I ever saw...

    1976 Mercruiser 351W Oil Pan

Gee, the oil pan on my '88 4.3LX rusted thru by the mid 2000s. I replaced it with an auto pan, b/c of the price differential. The oil pickup needed to be bent up a little bit I think you are real lucky to have yours so long. You might take a look at your pan and make sure it is not ready to...

2016 Yamaha F150 blowing exhaust out of leg

The cylinder head on my neighbors 200HP HDPI Yammie rotted out, allowing water into the cylinder. I for one, do not think that should happen.

    putting her to bed

Gee, canvass covers usually do not need fans. Why do you need 'em?

Entire electrical system dies when under way

That inline fuse holder still looks corroded.

Are pontoons easy to repair by welding?

My neighbor has taken the boat to the local welder for repair. We will see what happens. I think the welder is an expert and the repair will be trivial for him. Previously, He welded a new skeg onto my outboard and repaired a crack in the triple clamp. He was the only welder that did not...

Basic sonar with GPS and lake maps?

The size of the screens drive the price. However, the OEMs are discontinuing models all the time and marking them down. I would recommend you get the largest screen you can afford. Preloaded maps are real nice.

    Old johnson V4

Can you still get thermostats for that motor? How about a coil? That looks to have battery ignition. Crowley only has Johnnyrude listings back to 1968. Gee, in the 80's, I did not want to pay the (high) price for a magneto coil, so I converted my Fat-Fifty to battery ign, using a Ford coil...

    Old johnson V4

That motor has an automatic choke. You might check it or proper operation. The one on my '61 40HP motor rusted solid. It was a good thing the manual choke lever worked just fine.

    Old johnson V4

On my Fat-Fifty, I modified the purging system so that the liquid fuel would be captured by a fuel tank in the boat, and the crankcase vapors would be burned. I estimated that about 1/6 of the fuel would be purged from the intake manifold and crankcase.

Water in floatation foam under the deck?

Gee, boats get wet during use all the time. The hull is designed to keep the foam dry. To find out if the foam is wet, you can weigh the boat or inspect it. Inspection usually takes drilling a hole and checking the foam and then sealing the hole. I would not let a perspective buyer drill...

    2007 2101 DC. Windshield repair.

Windshield support bars are pretty commonly available. The rubber gasket under the windshield should be as well. If the windshield is racked, you should see what caused it. Sometimes it is the hull deforming. On my SeaRay, the hull spread a bit at the windshield and the hinged part would...

77 Merc 500 pumping but no tell tail

Gee, the telltale is usually supplied by a 90* elbow on the cylinder head water jacket. Pull the hose off and see the water stream. If none, you have a problem with the impeller/water pump of some kind of serious clog in the cooling passages.

    Old johnson V4

The early V4 engines had those downdraft carbs. I had two 50HP V4s (Fat-Fiftys) from '58 and '59 and I never thought the carbs were real good. They allowed un-atomized, liquid fuel to enter the intake manifold and crankcase. In order for the motors to idle smoothly, any liquid fuel that built...

Source for Johnson OB ign wiring?

Unfortunately, I needed a new keyswitch last year, and replaced it with the original style. I am therefore married to that harness. It is no big deal, moneywise.
