Repowering my old 16ft aluminum boat thinking of going 4 stroke but have a question

What kind or performance did you get from the 85 hp? My 1992 Merc 40 is the 4 cylinder classic two stroke. Been an awesome motor, better performance than most other 40 hp models. Easy on fuel....a new 40 hp four stroke is rated at saving about 1.5 gallons per hour over my old two stroke...

Repowering my old 16ft aluminum boat thinking of going 4 stroke but have a question

Wow, two strokes are going for good prices, more than in my area. However when folks realize the repair costs if needed, they do tend to steer towards the two stroke. Guess I am old school here, the oil injected two strokes give off very little smoke and I can't smell any burnt oil with mine...

Is it true that Easy Load roller trailers ruin fiberglass boats???

No matter which style trailer, you need to properly support the hull.. Thin cheap hulls need even more support. My 1983 Islanders has always set on a roller trailer, no dents, but it does have lots of rollers ! My current 16' has 14 rollers just to give you an idea.

Repowering my old 16ft aluminum boat thinking of going 4 stroke but have a question

My local dealers tell me that if a major problem arises under warranty, they just swap out a short it long block rather than actually tearing down the motor to make the repairs. Faster to swap out a short/ long block than the labor to tear down and rebuild a four stroke....

Repowering my old 16ft aluminum boat thinking of going 4 stroke but have a question

Buying a used 4 stroke could be a big gamble, the reason being is they are " very expensive to work on" where two strokes are pretty cheap and simple. I am an old two stroke fan...I have a 16' Sylvan side console with a 40 hp two stroke that dies 31 mph. Moving up to a 60 up four stroke would...

    safety chain question

Guess I should have ask whether the poster was just towing a trailer or doing serious vehicle recovery. For routine trailer ing a connect would be fine but serious recovery would be better with a longer chain.

    safety chain question

There are all types of links to add more chain to make it longer. Some are fairly cheap, just match the rating on the chain.

Help - Boat Accident and Insurance

Just went thru this with my vehicle less than 2 months back. Long story short....your gonna get screwed....not what you want to hear, but the insurance company has control. In my case, I had to find a comparible equipped make and model vehicle and must be at an actual dealer with a vin number...

    Servicing my trailer bearings

Yes....if the prior grease is unkown, better to clean out everything and use a known grease to rebuild. Some types of grease do not mix well with others. Experienced it myself many years back. The different types turned into a liquid and ran out and destroyed the bearings and races.

    Outboard gas tank problem

Check the pickup inside the tank and the fuel inlet on the motor. Has the carb been rebuilt after sitting for 25 years? Best bet is to replace all the hoses on the motor and rebuild the carb with a factory rebuild kit. Probably gunked up from old fuel. The fitting on the tank where the hose...
