    4.3 Mercrusier carb questions

The Carb Kit, should contain a Sheet, showing the process, and all the adjustments to the linkages. However, the kit might cover a bunch of carbs, that may have differences, so pay attention

Bass boat trim authority sucks in mid range

I suspect you are trimming up too much at the lower speed. The standard mode of operation, is trim out until it start to porporise, then trim it in until it stops You could try a Merc Enertia, it is a prop that will lift the bow, in fact the entire boat will be lifted vertically out of the water.

    Cleaning pitting aluminum

I think chemically is the way to go, I know Aluminium and Sodium Hydroxide are not all that compatible. I would be leery of any strong acids, a weak Acid and a toothbrush might work, but eye protection and a face shield need to be used

    1986 Mercury 9.8 110 outboard

if the ignition system is capable of jumping a Spark 3/8" I would be very hard pressed to say the Coils are bad. However, if the wires have a weak spot in the insulation, there as possibility that the wires when relocated as they are when connected to the installed plugs, are able to arc to...

V4 - Minimize Chances of Broken Rings

Being that the top Ring was a Half Keystone Ring, in a Trench mirroring its shape, it probably rocked in the Trench, presenting a scraping edge to the Cylinder wall instead of the side of the Ring, which had a slight Crown. OMC marketed the Ring as being an advance, saying it used Combustion...

V4 - Minimize Chances of Broken Rings

More realistically, the 17 was prop that was shipped with the Engine. It was often a good choice for boats in the 15-16ft range. Even the Engine Brochures would have in fine Print that other props may be more suitable and that the Dealer could change it out while rigging. The 90hp put out its...

    Prop / prop shaft damage

I suspect that the Gearcase is low on Oil and the Upper Gears/Bearings were starved. Most VPs have a Hexagonal Bolt/Screw a the top of the Outdrive housing. It will also be a Dipstick. Remove it and see if there is any Oil on it

V4 - Minimize Chances of Broken Rings

It will be a classic case of the Owner claiming "Oil is Oil". In their Ignorant mind(s), there is no difference between a Top Tier TCW-3 and a TCW-3 that barely meets the Spec.
