    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Doing more reading, apparently the older drives (Alpha 1 gen 1 and earlier) don't use crush sleeves or rolling torque and instead use 200ftlb on the nut? Is this accurate?

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Add the gimbal bearing to the list... spins freely but is lightly crunchy. May explain the seal failure (and/or made the failure worse). I have a boating coworker who has the special tools for such (alignment bar and bearing puller) so I'm good there. As far as I can tell the drive shaft...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

That's normal?!? Edit- duh- the foot drives the torx shaft in the lower unit, the seal's in the lower. So maybe just need to do upper case seals? Would that seal going bad explain all the oil?

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

This job just got a lot deeper. As soon as I broke the seal, oil started dripping out: Once removed, it was a water-oil mess everywhere: Tracing the oil, it leads up to the bottom of the input seal... so that's probably wasted: (The U-joint, on the other hand, feels good, not tight and...

    Gauges recommendation

Valid point... if the voltage is coming back to normal with just the volt gauge disconnected (other gauges still connected) and swinging from 0 to full system voltage, then that points to the fault being an internally shorted volt gauge or some other short that was corrected by disconnecting...

    Best "low effort" towable?

Yeah except both appear to be smaller single rider tubes... weight capacity no good. There wasn't a capacity listed on the race tube (other than suggesting a 2400lb rated tow line), but being a two-person tube, figured it'd be close enough to hold me (it didn't have issues other than the skin...

    Best "low effort" towable?

Even for this ancient thing? It's so old that it doesn't have the modern plastic cleat for the rope.

    Gauges recommendation

With the volt gauge disconnected do/did the other gauges start working? If so, the volt gauge is shorted (faulty) and is overloading the instrument cluster wiring. If not, there is likely a marginal connection in the power/ground feeding the instrument cluster. Analog gauges (especially...

    Best "low effort" towable?

Reviving this... I scored an old AirHead "Race" tube second hand on a vacation in Missouri a month or so ago... and other than a sore butt, it was a winner: (My wife on it, I rode it too but the video didn't turn out) Sadly, the cover ripped in two separate places (age or being stepped...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Yep... the one that uses a special "prong socket" and is threaded.

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Gotcha. Ordered Quicksilver 45518T1 which is a kit with the bushings and the lever. The lever roller may be shot anyway with as sloppy as my shifting was. Grease: I have a grease gun with marine rated grease in it that I use for the zerks on the outdrive. That's what I planned on using for the...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

How much more work we talking? When I had the drive apart to do the impeller last spring (2024) I don't recall that portion of the shifter feeling particularly sloppy. Edit- nah, I'll check it when apart. If it it all is suspect, I'll replace. But if not, I'm reading it can be a royal pain to...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Also ordered some Permatex Aviation Form a Gasket from the LAPS... not feeling good about gambling with the other stuff I have (RTV, The Right Stuff, etc.).

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

I checked. It's old. Can't get a pic but the hex head is clearly on the boot side. Appears to be original. Ordered the tap along with the special socket and the Mercruiser OEM kit (which includes a boot and the outdrive gasket).

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

New problem: since this a 1976, it uses the older style cable. I'm reading that it's possible and recommended to tap out to the newer style but the thread I found is from 2017 with lots of dead links: https://forums.iboats.com/threads/mercruiser-mc-1-pre-alpha-new-shift-cable-diy-job.702757/...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

That's the first video I saw. I have some bicycle cable to my disposal which should work great as a guide wire... and if not, I'll come up with something. Also, I failed at math in my last post... 1/4" over slop tolerance. Worse! (Doubly embarrassing yet unsurprising, since I'm technically an...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Im getting 13/16" of slop. Max allowed is 9/16"... So 3/16" out of spec. Cable replacement time?

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Nope... But watching it now. I'll check the wear but I'm pretty sure it's out of spec. He did mention that 1976 is where 6" on the lower cable started and before it was 5 7/8". I think my serial is in fact 1976... but if not, maybe that's part of the problem?

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Seems something is indeed shot. Went through the adjustment... even with the lower cable stud all the way up (which is how it was originally), I can't get engagement in both directions with the throttle lever. If I manually pull the lower cable, it does engage as it should... so lower cable gone...

    Gauges recommendation

I mostly have Faria Beede gauges on mine. Very good quality and not stupid expensive. The original 1976 Starcraft gauges were very faded and half functional at best. But, I went generic Chinese on the GPS speedometer since it was replacing a defunct pitot tube setup and isn't nearly as...
