    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Frustrating day. The theme is "messed over by tools" (what I wanted to type is a bit more colorful, if you like!) First issue was getting the shift cable threaded into the bellhousing. As it turns out, I erred by buying a cheap socket on eBay. (file uploads aren't working, so no pic) Notably...

    File uploads no good again?

Seems for me today, that file uploads are failing in the same way they did back in August of last year: https://forums.iboats.com/threads/photos-not-saving-to-server.773767/ Had it both on my phone earlier and now on my laptop... both were on my WiFi so technically it could be ISP related?

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

More work done today: Shift cable and bellows removed (I ran some coated wire rope to maintain the routing). Bellhousing tapped. Didn't cut metal; seems the threads were always all the way thru and the tap is just to clean junk from said threads? Per my prior posts, swapped shift shaft...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Sloppy on the shaft. That said, from what I'm reading this is common/normal.

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Working on the bell housing and having an issue. Seems the new lower bushing is very sloppy compared to the old bushing. The upgraded upper bushing fits the shaft fine. Is this intentional? Or am I correct to put the old bushing back in?

    How do you trim?

Well, trimming up historically didn't do that for me. No change.

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

5/16 and 8mm are virtually the same size. Especially in a low-torque situation like these hose clamps. In any case, nothing locally available, so hopefully a 1/4" u joint and a non-deep socket will clear... not nearly as tight as the previous trim wiring job (where a very-low-profile MAC 7/16"...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Called it at 15 minutes... seems to be sealed well. I'll fill it with oil and grease the u joints before it goes on. Attempted to pop the exhaust and shift bellows... seems I'll need to get a flex headed 8mm or 5/16" 1/4" drive socket to get to the transom hose clamps. Same routine as what I...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Speedy sleeve came in. Drive has been assembled and is currently pressure testing. Holding 12psi for 40 mins and counting. Edit: I've since rotated the shafts and pressurized up to 17psi. We shall see how it goes. I'm supposed to receive the replacement bell housing gasket/seal kit tomorrow...

    How do you trim?

Nope. All pics I have are either at idle speed or taken while on the boat. That said, here's a couple videos for earlier this year with the boat running on plane and trim all the way down. Last year I did try trimming down on plane and it didn't increase speed at all. Everybody I've talked to...

    How do you trim?

As far as I know the foam in the back is dry. There are exposed portions and no signs of wetness in such. The rest is under glass and wood (not easily checked without ripping a lot out). It was like that for many decades... So nothing new.

    How do you trim?

Nothing much added from stock in terms of weight. That's a 302 in a 16' boat... the biggest engine Starcraft offered for this model and length. I'm told the whale tail helped a lot as it did have issues getting on plane originally. In current form, I wouldn't say it handles "bad"... although...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

I've begun the reassembly work (after cleaning all the metal chips out of the case, three times over... that stuff is persistent!). I did use aviation gasket maker (permaseal) on the case side of the water pocket gasket to address the gouges in the surface. I also used it on the driveshaft seals...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Ideally one would use a metal block. Based on how much of a fight the other bolts put up, I figured helicoil was going to be a given. Not to mention I didn't have high hopes of the aluminum threads being in good shape based on how much likely had become corrosion. Helicoil is theoretically a...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

No, if there isn't a reason to expect trouble, don't mess with it. The reason I pulled it was partially because I already installed the new pipe seal in the other pocket (and was too lazy to try to move the seal), and partially because having noted what is likely a severe impeller failure in the...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Well.. that's what I did. Using the old water pocket! And spoiler alert, it did work. First, here's the tooling I bought: Milwaukee Shockwave 17/64" drill bit 12" DeWalt locking 1/4" hex extension 1/4-20 Helicoil (Note- you want a name-brand install tool for clearance reasons- "other" brand...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

I haven't tried to pull the pocket from the gary drive... I'm going to try another home solution tonight or tomorrow. The plan is to use a water pocket as a drilling guide and a Milwakee Shockwave 17/64 drill bit (which has a 1/4" hex shank) with a 12" drill extension to drill the holes for a...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Against my better judgement I tried to weld some nuts to remove the broken bolts... nope, the bolts just kept breaking internally. Once it got below flush I stopped. My nuts messed the surface up a bit, so that may need to be decked while it's in the mill. The things I do to try to get out of...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Got the drive back... they did have to helicoil it. But... more broken bolts, this time in the water pocket: I used my impact on its lowest setting. The two that didn't break I used a 1/2" drive 11mm shallow with an extension (my SAE impact selection isn't too hot). The two that did I had to...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

I have the shop working on it... no luck welding, it's going to the mill. They weren't comfortable trying to free the trim cylinder pin (without machining it out, more trouble than I think it's worth), so it's just going to be a captive part (makes installation a bit harder, but whatever). Based...
