:) Brought Home "Another" Motor Today :)

The wife may kill me, but what the heck  . Johnson 50ESL72C, 1972 I believe. I can only hope this was a smart buy at $400, with a spare motor and a half, 2 spare props, and spare controls. Compression hasn't been tested, but it was a friend who sold it to me, I've ridden in his boat...

    Tiller Twist Grip Tension Adjust

'58 Johnson FD-12 18HP, the throttle seems like it could have a little more resistance/tension. My dad's Merc has a knob on the end you tightened down to increase the "drag", mine has a screw on the side of the grip but seems to have no effect one way or the other... is it just an assembly...

    Motor-tone changes at wot

Re: Motor-tone changes at wot This sounds exactly like my problem bbstacker1, if I slow it goes back to normal too and I sometimes don't need to slow much. I had originally suspected a flow issue in the exhaust port too, but thought maybe that was too simple... maybe wrongly so. It's almost...

    Motor-tone changes at wot

Talking about my '58 Johnson FD-12 again, maybe this is normal, I don't know.... The only way I can describe it is if you voiced a flat vowel "Aaaa" and held it, this would represent the normal "tone" of the motor at WOT. Now, if while holding the "Aaaa" you changed it to an "Oooo" and voiced...

    Wider Plug Gap for Trolling?

FD-12 1958 18hp I've seen it posted here a couple times about gaping the J6C's to .035 instead on .030 if you do a lot of trolling to keep from fouling the plugs. I use this engine as a get-there unit as well as troll a lot with it, would this be a wise thing for me to do? As always, thanks...

    Hole in Carb ???

Re: Hole in Carb ??? Oh crap!! lol I hope it's the right carb, there are some mounting screw holes for something on the starboard (same side as said hole) side that I'm not sure of tho... Here's some more pics in hopes that you can tell me if it's the wrong one (Good Lord)

    Hole in Carb ???

Model FD-12, 18hp Johnson.... This hole is leaking a lot of fuel when my engine is in the upright tilted position. (red circle at tip of screwdriver) It looks factory made... but I'm not sure, any ideas on what it is? Is it supposed to have a lead shot or something? It's not very big in...

Steering Bracket Stops Engine from Trimming....

Re: Steering Bracket Stops Engine from Trimming.... Thanks for your patience guys... OK, here's the set up as it stands : I don't know if there's any room to make any adjustments... or to add the piece you're recommending Frank, what do you think?

Fuel Runs from Carb When Motor is Tilted Up

Re: Fuel Runs from Carb When Motor is Tilted Up Alright... I tore it down and bent the float a tad to eliminate it as the culprit, started right up and let it run for a few. Shut her down, released the pressure in the tank and disconnected the fuel line and tilted it all the way up. Still...

    Compatible Parts 'Rude 4441 / FD-12?

Hello again, picked up a '51 14hp Evinrude for $25 because the prop looked like it'd fit my '58 18HP Johnson (which it did, tho it's a different shape). On closer inspection, the gear-cases look to be the same size. I cant find a parts list/catalog for the 'rude to save my life, I want to know...

Fuel Runs from Carb When Motor is Tilted Up

I've posted about this motor before and had great help. This is something I've just noticed yesterday however... 1958 FD-12, after some fun in the sun I go to trailer the boat at the launch, but first I need to tilt the motor to the up position. I looked back as I clamped the trailer winch to...

'81 Johnson 9.9 Recoil Keeps Locking

Model is J10RCID. Every time (or almost) I go to pull the cord, it is locked. It started slowly, I used to be able to adjust the throttle a bit and it would release for me and it would start. Now I have to remove the cover and hold back the red piece in the pic. Is there a quick fix for this...

Steering Bracket Stops Engine from Trimming....

Hey everyone... Got a Big Twin 40 on a 14ft runabout, the steering is a single heavy line coming from the right side of the boat. Once it comes through the gunnel, it is mounted to a bracket on the transom... then an extension runs to the motor. Works great, if you don't need to trim your motor...

    Propshaft Seal Question '58 18hp FD-12

Hello again... I ordered a gear-case seal kit from ebay and instead of 1 large driveshaft seal, I seam to have 2 smaller ones. I've done some reading on here and have seen it said that others have had the same thing, however I found nothing on the orientation of installation. How do they go...

    '64 40hp Big Twin

Model 40402s, I have some unburnt fuel mix seeping from my front right hand starter motor mount bolt. The bolt runs through the intake manifold an maybe the reed block too... how bad is this? When I purchased the motor there was a build up of sludge I thought was axle grease at the time... now...

'62 Mercury Twin 25hp Push Button Shift

Hey there everybody, an old man down the road has given me this motor. The serial is 1499226 and it is white, the only thing visibly missing is the gearcase/foot. I assume they aren't very common, I can't find much online about them so I was wondering what value this unit has as a parts motor...

    Choke Switch '76 Merc 200

Hello everyone, My serial # is 7077738 and it's a 20hp, my issue is my choke knob does not stay engaged when I pull it. I have a spare engine with a working assembly, but I can't seem to take the knob off to remove it from the lower cowl. Must be something simple I am missing here :redface...

    '58 FD-12 Super Lean

Starting a new thread here guys... Hope that's Ok:redface:... lol I've cleaned and reinstalled the carb on this engine replacing the packing washers only. The float was good and the float needle seems fine, doesn't stick and is not grooved so I kept it. The packing however, came out in pieces...

1958 Johnson FD-12 Starter Recoil Trouble

Re: 1958 Johnson FD-12 Starter Recoil Trouble So here's a few pics of the new addition to the family... I love her already lol Under the hood she's in pretty gleaming shape, I was told it had one owner before the guy I got it from bought it. I envision an old man with a spritzer full of oil...
