Fuel Runs from Carb When Motor is Tilted Up

I've posted about this motor before and had great help. This is something I've just noticed yesterday however...

1958 FD-12, after some fun in the sun I go to trailer the boat at the launch, but first I need to tilt the motor to the up position. I looked back as I clamped the trailer winch to the front eye bolt of the boat and saw a great deal of fuel "pouring" from the engine cover into the boat (about 3-5 ounces I think).

It's got a complete new carb kit including float in it and new fuel lines...

Any ideas on why? Or how I can stop this?

could it be leaking at the bowl? maybe the seal isn't good. like something got warped at some point? I have seen a bit of gas leak from my old 'rude when I tilt it, but it's usually just a bit of gas in the connector and line to the carb. 3-5 ounces seems like a lot. Was the fuel line still connected to the motor when you tilted it?

Yes, the tank line was still connected... I may be wrong about the amount, could have been only an ounce or 2, still more than there should be :). When I first noticed, it had been running into the bit of water leaked into my boat. The "peeing" sound was what first got my attention, it continued to run at about the same velocity for about maybe 3 or 4 seconds then slowed until I reached the motor and tilted it back down to vertical. When I opened the engine cover, a small bit more ran out.

I haven't had a chance to really check this out yet (very busy today), but I will open it up and check all seals tomorrow... thanks for the suggestions

Not that unusual for the old motors to leak a little gas when tilted up. You may want to disconnect the fuel line and run her until she stalls before tilting her up.

Running a 2-stroke out of gas isn't good for the motor(cyls are starved of oil).....esp if it's done regularly.

Probably best to find the source of the leak and then make a decision whether it's worth the effort to fix/minimize the leak.

Yeah, not good to run them till they're out of gas. A bit of spillage is not unusual as lindy pointed out, but the OP suggested 3-5 ounces which seems like a lot. I still think there is a leak where at the bowl. easy fix.

Alright... I tore it down and bent the float a tad to eliminate it as the culprit, started right up and let it run for a few.

Shut her down, released the pressure in the tank and disconnected the fuel line and tilted it all the way up.

Still leaked, not as much because I was there to catch it... but I found where the leak is coming from:)

There is a small factory hole on the starboard-side of the carburetor and there is an abundant amount of fuel seeping out of it while the motor is in the upright position.

Any ideas ??

Forgot to mention, the hole is at the tip of the small screwdriver...

Sorry so fuzzy, couldn't get it to focus for me
