    J90ELEDR Cooling Concerns

Thanks for the input. I've been away because of work, and only saw this now. I'm using an electronic thermal temp sensor gun. Turns out I was partially right. Those rubber coated metal gaskets do in fact go between the cylinder head and the block, and upon further inspection I can now see and...

    J90ELEDR Cooling Concerns

I mentioned this is a freshwater unit in my opening post. I haven't pierced the tan wire and grounded it, but I have pulled the sensor from the block and grounded the sensor itself. The light came on, but no beep, likely because the engine needs to exceed 1000 rpm for the safety system to...

    J90ELEDR Cooling Concerns

Different block. Wrong thermostat assembly. I've changed the standard all-metal thermostats on older outboards before, but never this plastic style. Hence why I missed the corresponding rubber-wrapped seal.

Anyone know the correct orientation of the thermostat seals on this engine?

    J90ELEDR Cooling Concerns

Alarm self test beeps without issue, all lights function. I think the manual says the heat alarm goes off around 117⁰C, but it's yet to trigger for me. It's also possible my estimation of upper 90⁰s may have been high, I didn't have my temp gun with me after the first couple runs that it stayed...

    J90ELEDR Cooling Concerns

I do, she was reading upwards of 107⁰ Celsius before I installed the missing seals. Way hot. Once the seals were in it read around 40-70⁰ on the good days, but back up in the high 90⁰'s on others. I really just need to know if I've got the seals installed in the right place. If so, then I'm...

    J90ELEDR Cooling Concerns

Hello again to all, this is a bit long winded, apologies ahead of time! I'm the 3rd owner of a J90ELED 1996 90hp Johnson with the 60⁰ block. The engine is in fantastic shape inside and out, it's been very well maintained and cared for. It has been a freshwater beast its whole life here in...

    Think I Screwed Up..

Hoping I'm OK here, but... Purchased what "looked" to be the correct manual for my 1996 90hp Johnson J90ELEDR, but when it came, I see it's Ocean Runner manual for the same year. How different / far-off is this going to be? Should I return it and continue to search for mine, or is it close...

    High-Speed Jet NLA??

Thank you gentlemen.. Racerone, if Chris is right (likely is lol), then it'll probably be something else. Think I'll maybe just wait the 2-3 weeks for the service manual, take it from there. Have a great weekend guys

    High-Speed Jet NLA??

Thanks Chris, Just got the motor with a boat purchase, motor was presented within the ad to be in "as-is" condition. Running, but rough. I replaced the fuel/vro pump assembly, thermostats, impeller kit etc... and when rebuilding the carbs, I noted all 4 of the orifices were...

    High-Speed Jet NLA??

Good day all, J90ELEDR, 1996 90hp Johnson. I'm trying to source a new set of high-speed jets (orifice) part #343528, but they seem to have stopped producing them... Is this another attempt at stomping out the 2 stroke outboard? Anyone have a line on where to find them? There's one on ebay...

    Johnson 50ESL72C Fuel Pump

Good morning everyone, my '72 50hp started surging last night at higher rpm exhibiting signs of a failing fuel pump. I've looked around, but there seems to be no rebuild kit affiliated with my model available. Am I losing it?? Thanks in advance for a little direction here...

    Upper / Lower Bearing Install

Hey everyone, still working on my complete tear down / rebuild and I've just replaced my upper and lower crank bearings on my '69 Merc 1000ss (2685637) and I used a hydraulic press to put the new ones on. Now, I was just reading another thread where someone mentioned the need to heat them up...

    Timing on a '69 Merc 1000

Hello again, I've almost completed my fuel system overhaul and will soon be ready for the link n sync procedure. Now I've been reading up a lot in this awesome forum on how the timing recommendations in my original merc service manual won't do to well with today's fuel, though I haven't seen...

    Couple of fuel system questions

Hey guys, I'm just about to rebuild the 2 fuel pumps on my '69 1000ss as part of a fuel system overhaul and looking at my parts catalogue, it shows them as 2 different part numbers. My question is what, if any, differences are there between them? Also, what's the best way to go about...

    50 Years!

Hi guys, just wanted to share something here that I've found. Sometimes the ghost in the engine is real!! I can't help but wonder how many owners, mechanics and backyard tinkerers over the last 50 years have been stumped on this engine.. or worked on it and missed it! 1969 Merc 1000 Tower of...

    Lower Crank Seal

Hey guys, I picked up a spare '57 18hp for parts and have been cleaning it up so it's not nasty to work with later, as well as to make sure everything is ok on it. When I popped the powerhead off the leg however, I found this laying in the baffle: Is it as simple as replacing these 4 parts...

    New Problem FD-12___VIDEO

Anyone ever seen this? I go to accelerate, and about 3/4's of the way up I get a stranger shudder or hesitation like it's missing or something. It will sometimes do it to the point that it lasts a long time and will not kick in like it does in end of this video, I either wind up running it at...

    '57 & '58 johnson 18hp parts swapping

FD-11 & FD-12, hoping to use the '57 as a parts engine. Are there any differences I should be aware of ? I need to swap the swivel-brackets and motor-mounts, I had hopes of using the carb too, but upon closer inspection someone jammed the SS needle and caved the housing in :(.
