    Evinrude 9.5 vs 8hp speed test

    What’s up everyone I just picked up an 8hp evinrude 1985 that I am going to be trying out in a few days. I have never used the 8hp so I don’t know speed wise what I’ll be getting on my 11ft aluminum. I have seen many say it is similar to an evinrude 9.5 speed wise. Is this true? Thanks.

    Well thank you both. I think I’ll try an 8hp see how it goes and go from there. If anything I’ll just end up using the 6hp. Wouldn’t even think about putting a 25 on it lol. I’ll update Everyone after the testing this week. Thanks

    Would a 8hp also be okay? It only weighs 5 more pounds than the 6. My only worry is overpowering the boat. Definitely don’t want to loose the motor or flip the boat somehow.

    Do you think a 1985 8hp evinrude would be any better? It weighs 56 pounds and the 6hp I have weighs 51. I got about 11mph with the 6hp but this was only after I added weight to the front before I did that it was only running 8mph. It ran great with the 6hp didn’t seems like too much motor at all...

    I used an original oem kit from marineengine.com it comes with the black float. It did have the original cork float however it look pretty gummed up so I just threw it out.

    Ya I had a feeling it was going to be the carb as well. Looks like the carb had never been rebuilt it had the original float and gaskets. Float was a little out of level too. Runs like a champ now. Thanks for the help!

    Cleaned and rebuilt carb. Definitely looked a little gummed up. Runs great now no coughing and idles great.

    You were right on! The bottom cylinder coil has some small cracks on the bottom of it. They looked brand new from the top so I left them alone. Guess I should always check them with an multimeter from now on. Thanks for the tip hope this solves it

    Yes i installed a new impeller a few months ago so it’s pumping great. I checked the points and made sure they were gapped correctly, replaced condensers. I will check the coils with a multimeter to see if they are okay. It seems that I’m getting good spark and the timing is okay. Like I said it...

    I have already tried turning the low speed mixture 1/4 at a time and this did not change anything. It has been idling great all up until today and I never touched the low speed mixture after I set it so I wouldn’t suspect that to be the problem. Could a stuck thermostat cause an issue like this...
