    Having Hot Start issues

Crazy question here. before you turn off the engine do you let it idle a bit to allow the temperature to go down a bit , or do you shut it off right away?

    2ND TIME REPLACING TRANSOM

That is because the Islander transoms were made with either redwood or cedar. Those plywoods hardly ever had any rot. I do not believe that you will find the same quality plywood anywhere these days

    2ND TIME REPLACING TRANSOM

Before you rip out the old transom you should find out why it started rotting and take care of the reason why the rot started. If the rot is not in a crucial support area you may be able to impregnate the rotting wood with some material , I think it is called "west Bond" from West Marine, that...

    Just curious

I do the same thing, not exactly with live savers but with old nuts and bolts and weak rubber bands. The weight reaches the bottom and one good jerk breaks the rubber band. the expense of some old nuts and bolts is zero , while lead sinkers are expensive when you loose one every time you drop a...

A tale of woe and poor anchor management.

Getting the anchor stuck in the prop is not hard when the anchor line is short, drags through the sand and whoever started the boat forgot that he was anchored in the first place

Replacing a transom on a 1989 Starcraft Islander.

So I contacted the dealer in Florida to order and pay for the Suzuki. He told me that the Suzuki company will not allow him to ship the engine from Florida to NY and he is not even allowed to have me install it myself. All of this is in order to protect local dealerships. The price difference...

Bob Weir of Grateful Dead passed on.

My wife of blessed memory told me that she used to go to the concerts in Rochester where the Jefferson Airplane would play in the city while the Dead would play at the Rochester Institute of Technology. When the concert at RIT was over, the Dead would come downtown and jam with the Airplane deep...

Replacing a transom on a 1989 Starcraft Islander.

Just a little update. The kicker is parked in the garage on its stand and 99% of all the nuts and bolts connecting the wood to the aluminum have been disconnected. At first the bolts where I used M5200 to seal the bolt holes were a real pain and quite discouraging , but then I started using...

    Cigarettes, shocked!

Cigarettes are a great source of income for the reservation stores. In western NY there is a little factory where the cigarettes are made and they are sold in the store nearby.

Another boring winter day in northern Wisconsin

Yesterday morning driving along Lake Ontario's southern shore there were branches flying through the air, but the lake was flat . The wind pushed the waves down and whatever was not pushed down went up as white foam and chunks of ice were surfing and skipping on the water.

My safety tip of the day is...

Just a small update. Right now near the East end of Lake Eerie close to Buffalo the water has been pushed so hard by the wind that the level there is 8 feet higher than it was a few days ago and some sections of route 5 are flooded. That also means that the water on the west end is probably...

maybe changing from 4.3 liter cobra to 175 Suzuki outboard on a Starcraft Islander Islander.

So I can launch and load at the ramp without doing damage. And why vertical? It worries me to trailer travel with the thing sticking out backward and possibly cracking the transom up, while when vertical the center of gravity stays a bit farther forward and it has less back and forth energy.

Charters return because most clients do not puke over the side as they are told to do and charter boat captains hate cleaning up other people's puke .

My safety tip of the day is...

These waves on the Great Lakes are a lot more destructive than they would be in the ocean. The wave periods are much shorter which means that instead of 8 or 9 seconds apart , they are 3 to 4 seconds apart. That makes a 25 foot wave in Lake Ontario about as destructive as a 40 to fifty foot wave...

maybe changing from 4.3 liter cobra to 175 Suzuki outboard on a Starcraft Islander Islander.

That was my original thought and I sort of retreated from that idea. What I would really like is a bracket/jackplate with an hydraulic piston or electric actuator that raises the outboard vertically instead of angling away and up, but so far I have not found one that will raise the outboard...
