    Cracked gearcase - ~91 90hp Force

The saga of my neighbor's dad's boat continues. Went to change the leg oil (was empty) and started with a pressure test. Air coming out of the propshaft seal, and a nice crack in the gearcase. Ii suppose this gearcase is totally toast as the driveshaft turns with a nasty squawk/grind/clunk...

"New to me" 3.0/Alpha One on Maxum 18

Neighbor picked this 18' Maxum up for a song. Hadn't run in a couple of years and apparently suffered a trim switch/relay malady so they removed the four hydraulic lines from the block at the bottom of the transom plate in order to manually lift the drive (grumble). The boat is really weathered...

    Curious

Running up the 140 in the barrel and once I blew a little water out of the barrel I noticed water pumping out of the leg where an anode had been attached. I'm assuming this is normal but have put bolts in the two holes since I would prefer not to spray the underside of the T&T whenever underway...

Noob question for a Force 906X91C

Buddy's dad has this motor but can't figure out how to cold start it. I suspect there's a release button on the control that lets you throttle it out of gear. Am I right? Thanks from an Evinrude dude.

    Fast idle control - 80's 90's Merc

I'm not a Merc guy but a neighbor was having problems with a 80's or 90's Merc 90 last season. Says there's no fast idle lever on the control - is there one? Or is there a shift release that lets you use the main throttle lever instead? It's his dad's boat and it's located in another province...

    Quartach?

I remember seeing a few of these back when I was rigging boats in the '80s. Were they any good? Or were they junk? Be nice to know the exact engine speed - I don't really trust analogue gauges when they get old.

    Need T&T box for X-flow V4

Hi all, trying to find a 1984 or newer T&T relay box and associated wiring so I can neaten up the wiring on my rig. The box is mounted at the top of the exhaust cover on these models vs the older ones with a much larger external box.

Converting fuel mixed at 16:1 to 50:1 And Other Brain Teasers ;)

I have a couple of gallons of fresh gas mixed at 16:1 and want to dilute it to 50:1 to run in another machine. Anybody know a quick way without hurting my head with math?

Cold starting at 2C - brrr

Today was the day to pull the boat off the lake as they're going to lower the lake levels on Monday. (Chestermere Lake is an irrigation reservoir and they lower it in the winter to reduce the amount of ice to melt in the spring.) Weather forecast wasn't looking promising for the rest of the...

Took her out for another spin

Crisp fall day and a flat lake, so I took the tinny out for another blast. Timing is now fully advanced to spec. Just need a proper prop, as it's revving a tad high. But maybe just a cupped 17" SST if I can find one. https://youtu.be/sbLxgYs2kbM

    Mystery propeller

Michigan PJ-10 - what's it for? Can't seem to cross it online as the part number shows a thru-hub exhaust. I think it's for a low-boy Sportwin 9-1/2 horse, 196? to 1973 since dad may have purchased it for our 1972 Sportwin.

Tried the Joe Reeves timing method

After running the motor for the summer, and knowing the timing was off (deliberately retarded), I took the time to do the Joe Reeves static timing test today. Pulled all the plugs, grounded 2,3 and 4, set #1 plug in place, shell grounded and attached the timing light. Initial spin showed timing...

    Carbs for a 140 x-flow

My motor is running with original '79 1-3/8" carbs. These are the more primitive units that have only idle and high speed jets. Midrange fuelling is simply controlled by the HS jets and the emulsion tubes at various throttle positions. My throttle shafts are quite worn - can move them about...

    Standard transom angle?

I'm going to build a motor stand for my 'rude V4. Anybody know the standard transom angle used for outboards?

    Dyno testing

A local shop has an outboard dyno that's basically just a water pump load cell with a pressure gauge. Apparently there's a table of pressures for outboards to give equivalent to HP ratings. Anybody know what the correct numbers would be for a '79-82 crossflow 140? BTW, the guy running this shop...

Prop for upped HP on rebuilt Xflow

Hi - I just finished building a 140HP powerhead as a replacement for the 90 I had on my old boat. The rebuild was done using a '79 140 block/heads/bubble exhaust/carbs, with rotating parts, new 0.030" os pistons/rings, and electricals from the original '82 90 motor. From the pan down, it's an...

    Rev limiting power packs

I'm running the original 1982 power packs on my rebuilt '79/82 140, and I understand these are non-limited packs. I also understand the ones with limiters are set at 5800 rpm max. I read that the non-limited packs are preferable to the limited ones, but if max RPM for the crossflow V4 is 5500...

    New kicker

Found this on our local auction site for the price of a tank of gas. https://youtu.be/vwOCuCWZXa0 '84 model. Compression is good. Seems to run cool, but the gas valve leaks badly. I'll need to give it some TLC - maybe an impeller and a carb cleaning. It'll make a good emergency kicker for...

    Re-painting ol' scruffy - '82 90/140

I know it's far off, but when the boating season is done for the year (early October), I think I'll build a wheeled stand, yank the motor, and store it inside since I don't have inside storage for the boat itself. Mostly to keep it warm and protected from the -30C weather but partly for...

I think my '82 OMC tach is lame

Pretty sure I'm passing 4400 rpm, but the tach seems to disagree. Thoughts?? https://youtu.be/36-azXGY-0g
