trying to pull out the transom, what a job..any words of wisdom?

I pulled the motor, removed the top caps and corner braces, got all the screws out, now the fun begins! Half of the transom is mush, the other half is swolen. The mush side falls apart and wont give me enough grip to hook it and leverage the rest out. What a P.I.T.A, any words of wisdom? The...

trying to find info on my Sea Master

I looked on the Sylvan ID site and cant find this model listed. The Hull ID is SYL02714M78G and the ID tag near the helm says 16' Sea Master. I don't see this model referenced anywhere in the info. I assume that this is a 1978 model, but I'm guessing based on the hull ID. The Sylvan website has...

16' Sea Master transom replacement, materials and technique questions

When I pulled up my floor it was 1/2" plywood marked "underlayment" which to me is just exterior plywood. I'm wondering if my transom is the same material, its too far gone to tell. Anyone used 2 layers of exterior plywood? If so, should I stagger the direction of the two sheets or would it...

16' Sylvan Sea Master steering cable replacement

The web shows an A-B-C measurement method, subtract 6" for my transom mount, round up to the next foot. I measured A+B+C = 159" - 6 = 153" rounded up = 13'. Does this sound correct or should I go to 14' just in case? Is there any harm going slightly larger? The original cable had to be wrong...

'78 Merc 500 50hp, fix it or replace it

My boat has a '78 Merc 500 50 hp motor in need of help. It hasn't been run for 10 years but it was well winterized and free rolling. In order to get it back on the water I figure that I need to rebuild the fuel pumps, rebuild the water pump, the starter bendix needs to be replaced, and the lower...

'82 16' Sylvan aluminum boat, floor replacement materials

I started this project thinking that I had a small section of floor to replace, at this point I think all but the elevated deck is bad. The previous owner let the cover go bad and the drain plug got blocked. I also need to replace the transom. At this point I think that I'm ripping it all out...

In search of a case for a Merc Thunderbolt, any suggestions?

1st off, I just found this forum... I'm thrilled to find a site with so much info. I'm also a boat owner newbe, I'm restoring an early 80's Sylvan deep V with a broken Merc Thunderbolt. I actually know this boat's owner so it should be a good project when finished. If I can find the parts.... I...
