    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

How much more work we talking? When I had the drive apart to do the impeller last spring (2024) I don't recall that portion of the shifter feeling particularly sloppy. Edit- nah, I'll check it when apart. If it it all is suspect, I'll replace. But if not, I'm reading it can be a royal pain to...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Also ordered some Permatex Aviation Form a Gasket from the LAPS... not feeling good about gambling with the other stuff I have (RTV, The Right Stuff, etc.).

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

I checked. It's old. Can't get a pic but the hex head is clearly on the boot side. Appears to be original. Ordered the tap along with the special socket and the Mercruiser OEM kit (which includes a boot and the outdrive gasket).

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

New problem: since this a 1976, it uses the older style cable. I'm reading that it's possible and recommended to tap out to the newer style but the thread I found is from 2017 with lots of dead links: https://forums.iboats.com/threads/mercruiser-mc-1-pre-alpha-new-shift-cable-diy-job.702757/...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

That's the first video I saw. I have some bicycle cable to my disposal which should work great as a guide wire... and if not, I'll come up with something. Also, I failed at math in my last post... 1/4" over slop tolerance. Worse! (Doubly embarrassing yet unsurprising, since I'm technically an...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Im getting 13/16" of slop. Max allowed is 9/16"... So 3/16" out of spec. Cable replacement time?

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Nope... But watching it now. I'll check the wear but I'm pretty sure it's out of spec. He did mention that 1976 is where 6" on the lower cable started and before it was 5 7/8". I think my serial is in fact 1976... but if not, maybe that's part of the problem?

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Seems something is indeed shot. Went through the adjustment... even with the lower cable stud all the way up (which is how it was originally), I can't get engagement in both directions with the throttle lever. If I manually pull the lower cable, it does engage as it should... so lower cable gone...

    Gauges recommendation

I mostly have Faria Beede gauges on mine. Very good quality and not stupid expensive. The original 1976 Starcraft gauges were very faded and half functional at best. But, I went generic Chinese on the GPS speedometer since it was replacing a defunct pitot tube setup and isn't nearly as...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

It ratchets both directions in both FWD and rev. Definitely needs checked. 😬

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

I saw the video... and yeah, that makes sense about the prop being windowed. Looks like an adjustment is in order... my next outing won't be for (at soonest) three weekends from now (have commitments the next two). And then we shall see.

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Bad cable or just needing an adjustment? Looks like I'll have to pull the outdrive to replace, something that was originally on the list for this last off-season until I discovered what I thought was dry rotting bellows was actually cracked dirt (no dry rot)... if an adjustment would get me...

    MC-1 Drive Dog failure?

Had a frustrating outing today with my 1976 MC-1 (888 302). It's always been hard to not granny shift without slamming the throttle (both directions)... but today was particularly bad (would not engage)... but then we seemingly hit something at the end that wildly nuked two prop blades on my...

Mercruiser trim up and trailer up non functional.

Did you check the switches and wiring? Granted, my Mercruiser is old (1976 MC-1), but at least on it, the trim up switch is used for both functions (the override switch merely jumpers/bypasses the trim limit switch on the outdrive to allow trailering). No noise and a presumably good solenoid...

Mercruiser MC-1: is this play acceptable?

Well, just less than a year later these new bushings are already looking like death... You've got to be kidding me... old stock issue? Maybe cutting down poly is the way to go after all...

    Starter issue

Agreed. Engines (and to be honest, any major assembly with many internal parts) get to a point that once there's enough damage, "repair" is no longer the correct term. As much will need to come apart to fix this, at least a minor rebuild is warranted. (For the next paragraph, I'm going to be...

1976 Montego 16- The "Free" Puppy

Not an outing, but the boat got put on display this Saturday at the local car show on Madison's riverfront (over 400 vehicles). Due to a long story resulting in a change of show leadership/rules and being dared by several buddies, I asked and was given permission to use the boat as an accessory...

    Gel coat repair gone wrong

It was ordered in the late winter/early spring, was stored in a box in the boat with a caulk gun and a tube of UV4000 (all ordered at the same time, the other items used to reseal my rubrail). Later on in covered outside storage... but before I got it, goodness knows.

    Gel coat repair gone wrong

That would do it... who knows how long it sat in the warehouse before it was shipped. And it was ordered a couple months ago, as my original plan was to use it as part of a currently-postponed job removing some defunct pitot tube hardware from the transom (and filling/covering the associated...

    Gel coat repair gone wrong

Not much per the instructions with the kit. I did make sure everything was clean. All areas were either gel coat or (in a few locations) down to the fiberglass resin. I wasn't expecting perfect results... but not this mess. I'll be doing good to be able wet sand the areas worked on so they...
