    Alpha one Gen 1 U joint removal

    The bearings just press on and off and yes, the shaft is shouldered. One bearing presses on the gear and the other on the shaft. With a slide hammer. The slide hammer is used to remove the lower race as well. You will need bearing race drivers to re-install. There are shims below both races.

    Alpha 1 Gen 2. The ratio should be 1:81 Lower units should be the same except for the 2:40 ratio. I believe the 2.40 ratio was high altitude??

    I've also had a chance to look into it a lot longer than you. I've purchased all new bearings, races, seal kits, gears and what not else for it. I've even went so far as to purchase a used 20 ton H.F shop press and a used slide hammer set.

    Bought a used upper housing. It has had some damage from gear failure but nothing like my old one has. The outside looks nice and the reason I considered it above more expensive ones. Bearing cup area looked good. We'll soon see if I made the right choice.

    Mercruiser 7.4 Dipstick Tube Broke, Can't Remove Oil Pan

    I'm wondering if those inserts were used to stop the bolts from crushing (over tightening) the oil pan gasket? Similar to the metal inserts used in a lot of valve and oil pan gaskets. What does the parts list show? Possible to look at a replacement oil pan online?

    There's your best piece of advice. Since you've done ring and pinions in the past, it should be an easy repair for you. The special tools necessary will add a bit to your costs but still better than replacing a complete drive as suggested.
