Outboard ran without water for about five minutes

WOWWWW!!! With that kind of logic, it is clear to me that you have never owned or serviced a boat with an outboard motor. Thats what I think

Outboard ran without water for about five minutes

Your 2nd sentence in your 1st BIG mistake. Typically running a motor in a drum /barrel of water is a pretty safe method .However you have proven my statement to not be 100% true. A "bin" aint a barrel/drum or landscaping pail which is what it should have been running in if not using muffs ..When...

    Winterize Engine That Won't Start

Open or remove every drain point and poke and probe with wire hanger with a right angle bend to the tip in case of a likely clog to the drain port.I would pull all hoses and introduce Af into each one .Better safe than sorry and if you dont get this right you will be VERY sorry.Charlie

Thread locker for permanent underwater applications

    JB Weld or alternative

I can think of 2 better alternatives. The 1st is to replace the manifold. This would be my #1 route. The 2nd best would be to remove the manifold and take it to get welded professionally. My last route would be to JB weld or Marine tex it CORRECTLY. The word correctly means to follow the...

WHY I HATE RUSTOLEUM AEROSOL PAINT

You guys are competing for the role of "Captain Obvious" ....Got nothing to do with shaking the can.I rotate the cans prior to using them .Rotate meaning store them upside down and right side up switching them over every so often and then I shake them plenty, before use during use (and if the...

Might be dipping my toes back into boating

I have seen a lot of walk around console boats that look almost identical.Sea Pro , Sea Boss , Sea Fox,Pro sports.Decent looking and more budget priced .I would go outboard only. I/o just has too many things to maintain and too many things to go wrong $$$$$ ,too many moving parts and less user...

WHY I HATE RUSTOLEUM AEROSOL PAINT

Just had a can of Rustoleum spray paint clog and fail before I used half of the can.As a matter of fact in the past 30+ years of boat maintenance and homeownership I dont recall ever being able to use an entire can of Rustoleum spray paint without it clogging and failing.NEVER!!! I wrote to...

    Hanging fenders from rail post

I would attach the fender to the dock in a horizontal manner. As a matter of fact on that beautiful boat I would run a string of fenders attached to the dock permanently.Less to do and less to worry about.Charlie

    Boat fabric for side boards

It is referred to as Coaming trim. You can go on the cheap at Joanns fabrics which I would only recommend if you are gonna keep it dry and covered. Or you can get the right material at Sailrite which will cost $15-$25per yd depending on the width and style.. If you have the patients you can do...

    Mercruiser 4.3 Prop Question

Incorrect statement. That IS an issue....if you are looking for top end speed.Your statement confirms that you have a prop that is a "pulling" prop.Low end torque /pull is for pulling tubes, water skiing, multiple occupants etc.A speed prop will do very little when you "punch the throttle".It...

    Badly weathered engine cover

Just clean it off with anything....Car wash, dishsoap, fantastic, etc .Just clean it off. Then try a small section with some cleaner wax or polish to see if any shine cones back up. I have seen quite a few Mercs with badly faded motor covers especially on the rear side.Worst case is you will need...

    Yamaha Outboard SLOW crank! Help!

If the starter is anything like the starter on my Jeep (which I dont think it is) a failing starter acts exactly like a failing battery.Slow crank.Got hit up with this twice on my Jeep and I replaced the battery both times with no improvement.Charlie

    Boat Cover

Assuming the trolling motor is easily removed ,I would take it home for the season.Better for the motor and better for your piece of mind.Shrinkwrap is the absolute best and carefully removed at end of season can easily be reused.Charlie
