1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

I liked the heavy aluminum keel roller brackets the trailer came with. They're slotted in the back for 1/2" square head T-bolts, so have infinite adjustment. The only problems were they were bored for less common 3/4 ID rollers, and 40 years of use elongated the holes a bit. I made a simple...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Spent yesterday cleaning out the car port and getting the large parts hung and plastic up. Started the morning brushing, blowing off and wiping everything with acetone. Used my old gun with the 1.5 tip at 85 PSI for the primer - took longer than I thought it would. Wish now I'd used the HVLP...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Decided I couldn't live with the bend in the 1/4" thick light brackets. Not sure how the PO bent them that bad. It was time to unbury the old arbor press this morning. Not so noticeable now. I'll have to do some paint touchup, but worth it to me.

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Saturday night I was tying threads until midnight to small parts that didn't have holes to hang for painting. I promised the Admiral I'd take her to the County Fair yesterday, so got up early. I taped the ends of the axle assembly and shot a coat of primer then moved the parts from the rack...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Did as much as I could on the frame the past 2 nights. It has 3 coats of Rustex and loaded on the trailer to go to the welder Monday night. Got the leaf springs cleaned up and coated last night. Did the same today with the axle. Had to improvise a bit and made a painting rack from a length...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Did some further reading and found out I was taking things too far for the coating to work, so tonight I finished everything up with a cup wheel top and bottom. Unbolted an old brace the PO had put on the side to support a weak spot in the frame. Got everything cleaned up for my welder to go...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Yep, the admirals usually out rank us lol Last Wednesday Ebag had an evening sale of 15% off any items purchased before midnight on a single invoice so I took advantage of it and ordered a bunch of items I had on my watch list. Between that and other things I ordered elsewhere, it's been like...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Thx guys. Spent the last two nights stripping more of the frame underside. When it came to the insides of the channels I found I had flap wheels and wire wheels that fit inside the channels, so started stripping the sidewalls of those too until my wife came out. After more than 30 years she...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Between the rust bath and some touch up with the wire wheel I'm pretty pleased with my former pile of rust. Some of those bolts are $6 ea to replace and the 5/16x3-1/2x3 square u-bolts have to be custom made. Moved on to start work on the frame. It had some dings and dents I wasn't happy...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Piddly stuff today. I laid out all the parts I either couldn't find direct replacements for or were cost prohibitive trying to stay relatively in budget. Setup 4 stations. Warm de-grease, hot rinse, rust remover bath (Sunnyside made by Sherwin-Williams) and 8" wire wheel. The wheel...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Weather sucked tonight, but I got a good 30-40 minutes in before it started to pour again. Really wanted to get enough apart for better measurements on replacement u-bolts. As it turns out, 2 of the 13 I had guessed at and already picked up were correct  . Oh well, was planning on...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

The rain turned last night into a bust so I ran up to Farm & Fleet to pick up paint samples to go over with the Admiral for the trailer and look at some seats they have on sale. Tonight the sun was back, so I made some decent progress stripping the trailer. About all that's left are the...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Was hoping I could do it myself, but had to enlist the Admirals help. I couldn't get the boat back far enough to lift the whole thing, So used the hoist on the stern and lifted the bow while she pulled the trailer out far enough for me to lower the stern onto the rear cradle then did the same...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Last winter I picked up some appliance dollies on sale cheap for when I was ready to make a cradle. With 12 wheels to carry any weight it should move around easily. Spent the whole day working on building it. 3 dollies 7 2x4x8 and some left over 1-1/2" foam. PS DO NOT TRY TO USE CONTACT...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Today was 90 and humid when I got home, but plugged ahead to get my list for the day completed (except for a 30 min break to hydrate). Sanded the Marine Tex and a light sanding of all the wood areas being painted. Sprayed then scrubbed all the areas to be painted with good old (original) TSP...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Quit early tonight after making the transom and gunwales look like they have the pox. Marine Tex is easy to work with, just a PITA to measure out for mixing. Mixed up 6 teaspoons worth which ended up twice as much as I needed. Sure glad it comes off easily where you don't want it with a...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Spruced up the old faded steering wheel before I left work last night. Pulled chrome clips, cleaned it up, and sprayed with some Fusion Texture Shimmer I had lying around. Polished up the chrome strips and popped them back on today. Baby steps, but have to keep moving.

    Can anyone identify this steering?

This is the hub from the 1977 Sylvan I've been working on. Everything works good, hub and cable are smooth with no binding. The sticker on the hub under the wheel says TR-188, but the closest sketch I can find looks like a Safe-T "TS"? I would like to know for my records in case I ever have...
