    Fiberglass Frustration

Howdy fellas!! Been outta pocket for quite some time, and can't remember the last time I posted on the forum. I have, however, been working on my boat when time and money permits. It's a miserable slow process but I'm plugging away and will post pics soon. I hope my current progress meets...

    Vinyl lettering/graphics....

I know that several of ya'll are doing complete paint jobs and was curious to see how many are going to go back with vinyl lettering or graphics. It's still in the distant future for me but if I use them i need to get them made soon. After the work required to remove the old stripes and...

    HIN question

I'm currently sanding the bottom of the hull and fixing stress cracks. I will definetly have to primer the hull before painting begins to seal my repairs. My problem lies with the HIN. It's embedded in the fiberglass in the usual place and so far I've been sanding around it. Is there any...

    Timing?

1989 Volvo Penta 230B I4/VP 275 outdrive I've gotten my Volvo cleaned, painted and resealed. I figured I'd run it on the stand for a few before I put it up while I finish the rest of the boat. Trouble is, I know what the plug and point gap are, and what the dwell is suposed to be, but have no...

    Volvo Penta reseal...with pics

If ya'll remember, when I got my boat, it didn't run. The fella I got it from didn't know why so I got it for a steal. A $15.00 timing belt and 20 minutes worth of work and she was running like a top! While I have it out I figured the best thing to do would be to disassemble it and replace...

    Foam console support?

I'll be repainting very soon and figured while I'm waiting on the paint to cure before I flip it over I'd start to work on the console supports. They were previously made from ply (with very little 'glass on it) but I've been considering using foam the way Mark42 did to build his bayliner cab...

    Hull Painting

I read somewhere on here that gel-coat would act like a primer and that if your boat is to be trailered then primer was completely unnecessary. My trailer has bunks and I am working on repairing some stress cracks on the bottom of the hull. Does this mean that I only need to primer the...

What draws you to your particular choice in boats?

This may not be the place for this, but I notice people from all over the country and different walks of life posting on this forum. All with they're own unique views and opinions, drawn together by one common thread....BOATS! There are fishing boats, pleasure boats, sail boats, and general...

    Houston....we have a problem....

I got my bulkheads cut a few days ago and was out of resin so I figured I'd wait til this weekend to get them bedded and cover the stringers and all at one time. Well....I left them in place in the boat and covered everything up. Yesterday I got home kinda late to find my tarp blown across the...

    Progress so far...

I've finally gotten the bulkheads cut and ready for 'glass. I cut them a little low so i can bed them in with peanut butter. The notches should add a little extra strength to the over all framework.

Finally got some pics to post....

Here are a few pics of the work so far. Some of 'em are a bit old because I've not been on here for some time. Here it is with the cap removed. Must've been 1000 screws holding it together. But they're all stainless so I'll reuse 'em. A tractor with a hayfork is the only way to pull an...

    still workin'

Hey there fellas! I've been out of pocket for some time now, but I have a good excuse. My daughter made contact with me some months ago. I haven't seen her in 13 years! I have a new grandson! Good grief, do I feel old! Been trying to build a decent relationship with them so boat work...

And the hits just keep on coming........

Was trying to remove both consoles today when I got tangled in an extension cord....fell on front of the engine and I heard a crunch. Well....there is no motor mount on the front of the engine so the transom is supporting the whole sha-bang(I know! I know! It's one of the things on my to-do...

    Stringers.....Plywood or 1X6?

Going to get lumber tomorrow for stringers and bulkheads. The original stringers were made from 3/4 plywood cut about 6" high at it's tallest. Wouldn't 1X6 treated lumber be less prone to rot? I thought the ply was a little silly because when you put down the decking you'll be screwing into...

    Cold natured

Why is my Volvo 230 not equipped with a choke? When starting it cold I have to keep the idle at about 1200 R's for a few minutes to warm it up. After that it starts and idles fine. Would an electric fuel pump be a good idea on this or should I put all my faith in the mechanical one?
