1971 Johnson 50
I can't be the only person who has run into this.
The yellow plastic clips that hold the carb and choke links have split and cracked...
My 1971 Johnson is overheating and I think I know why.
After replacing the water pump impeller and putting on the housing the next step is to raise the lower unit so that the water tube seats inside the water pump housing and is sealed by a rubber grommet.
My concern is that the copper water...
Spent the last month changing head gasket, thermostat, water pump etc as last trip last year it was overheating badly.
Parts were all trashed, little tough getting parts quickly these days.
Ran fine on muffs in garage.
Today I took it out on the lake 1st time, started Ok but wouldn't go over...
I know I'm not the only one who has dealt with this.
The shift wires have the standard ribbed one piece covering that is supposed to prevent the exhaust gases from entering the upper unit so the carbs are not running partially on exhaust fumes.
Recommendations are to grease this ribbed...
I am tuning up my 71 50hp and when I run it on muffs suddenly it will just about double it's RPM's and start smoking a lot more than usual. This is after I make a slight adjustment to the needle valves to get highest possible idle speed.
It will not turn off with the key I have to go and pull...

I have lost my tilt handle, thing you grab when raising motor, Johnson part# 0316082.
I can still "muscle" the motor up but will it change the running of the motor at all, just having the open round hole.
#2
I am getting exhaust coming up through the hole in the upper unit where the shift...
My engine has exhaust coming up through the tube that the transmission wires use to get to the lower unit, this causes poor running.
Last time I had it apart I greased the "fat" part of the wire loom to slide it up.
I don't want to tear this apart again, everything old and fragile.
Is there a...
Possible silly questions:
1.I have had the top nut on my starter fly off and lost the spring, have tried others from Ace hdwe but they are too weak.Anybody have luck with a replacement?
2.There is a top piece that contains the spring on the top below the nut. I have a couple of these should I...
Long story short, I dropped the smaller top cowling piece in 30 ft of water.
Had unscrewed it for painting and didn't refasten.
15ft tri-hull was maxing out at usual 20 mph before loss.
After loss it sounded like it was missing at wide open.
Putting my hand over the hole where the smaller...
I have an exhaust leak coming through the hole where the shift wires exit the lower unit and enter the upper unit.
I know the shift wires have a ribbed rubber covering that should be greased and should be seal the opening off.
These have been spliced a few times by the PO and I'm afraid to pull...
Have had boat out twice in last week, top speed used to be about 22 1/2 MPH.
15 Ft fiberglass tri-hull
Sorry no tach.
2 days ago it was running fine but topped out at 20 MPH, thought that I needed to adjust trim plate to right as it was pulling to right.
Adjusted trim plate boat runs straight...
Just changed water pump ( working now ) and may have screwed up shifter wires when pulling through to make connection at engine.
Also opened up shifter box in a misguided attempt to add tach to switch, tach wires were cut off at tach when I got it.
Switch rotates when I turn it even after...
Are these terminal gouges in my crankshaft 1971 Johnson 50.
I pulled the flywheel on good advice from a forum member to find my woodruff key had disintegrated and I presume had left crank gouges.
Are these repairable with let's say filling with JB Weld or some other method.
These are all gouges...
Trying to start my Johnson 50 in a tub and I notice that the starter gear will not stay engaged and that the flywheel then seems to run in the opposite direction for a split second afterwards.
What is going on here?
Many thanks,
Jim
