I want to repaint the motor cover of my old 40hp Big Twin but, because it's made out of fiberglass, I'm concerned about getting a proper product to remove the old paint. Has anyone used something that will do this effectively without destroying the glass?
Thanks.
After a few weekends of boating with my recently restored 1960 Flying Crest (aluminum) and 1963 Big Twin 40 hp motor, I've come to the conclusion that I need a little bit bigger motor. Even with only three of us in the boat (<450 lbs total) pulling a skinny 16 year old on a tube, it just doesn't...
I've got a couple of questions about the plugs on my Big Twin. When should I inspect them and what do I want to see? I guess I don't know if expectations are different for a 2 cycle motor than a 4 cycle. I've been attempting to tune this motor but I'm not really sure what I'm doing, to be...
First outing with the restored boat and motor last weekend. It ran great and everything went well, except that the electric start has crapped out. I have a brand new Sierra (I think) switch so, when there was no click and the starter itself was still working, I assumed that it was the very old...
I was hoping to finally test this thing on the lake this weekend but now it looks like it may rain for 4 or 5 days. In any case, I'm trying to put together a list of basic supplies to take with me in the boat as well as to have on shore in my vehicle. This will just be for pleasure boating in...
What kind of battery do I need for my 40hp Big Twin? My motor has no generator and the battery will only be used for starting and occasionally for running lights at night. I spoke with my auto parts guy today and he gave me prices on "deep cycle" and "deep cycle/starting" batteries. I thought I...
Before winter I put some fuel stabilizer in a full 6 gallon simple plastic fuel tank and set it in the back of the boat. I did not vent the tank because I was concerned about evaporation. Unfortunately, when the weather started to warm up the pressure in the tank pushed fuel (mixed with oil)...
Re: Need new control cables for 40hp Big Twin
After measuring cables again, I got my control box open this evening. It appears to me that the ends on my shifter control cable can be easily swapped over to a new cable. However, it looks like the ends on my throttle cable are not removable. Is...
I've put the 1963 Big Twin 40 hp (40352) on my old 17' Crestliner hoping that that control cables might be the right length, but of course, they're just a little short. I'm sure that this has been covered before and I'd be glad to read an old thread. Just couldn't find one now when I searched...
How the heck do I get the steering wheel off of my old Crestliner? The shaft appears to be threaded only at the very end where the big nut holds it in place. The hub of the wheel itself appears to be a steel collar held in place with a key. I don't want to pry on the chrome cover behind the...
The grommets or u-channels that cover the edges of the holes in the side walls and splash well of my boat through which the wiring, fuel line, and steering pass are all shot. There are some sort of odd sizes including round 1 1/2" and 2 7/16", plus two oblong holes 4 1/8" x 2 1/1". The sheet...
I've got a 50 year old trailer that carries my 1960 Crestliner 17' aluminum boat. I completely rebuilt the trailer last year and it's now in fantastic shape. It's the type that hinges towards the front so that the boat can come off at a steeper angle. About the only thing I have left to do is...
I've read several of the really helpful threads about how to replace and repair an old cable, pulley, & drum steering system. I'm about to start in on that, but I've got a couple of questions about the springs used in these systems. Somewhere along the way these springs in my boat must have been...
We've begun what looks to be a rather arduous process of repairing the seats in my 1960 Crestliner Flying Crest boat. The seats had all been rebuilt almost from scratch about 20 years ago, I'm guessing. They used treated plywood on the bottom of the seat cushions with no additional sealant...
My 40302D parts motor is in pieces. The power head and exhaust tube are together but...
- the fuel pump is off and taken apart
- the carb is off and in one piece
- leaf plate assembly is off, also intake manifold
- lower unit is completely disassembled
- etc.
I would prefer to not reassemble...
