Hey guys, I have a '99 Johnson 225 HO with a problem that I'd like to figure out.
Motor is on an '89 21 foot Stratos bass boat that I picked up about a month ago.
Motor seemed to run fine on muffs. When put on the water it has next to no power (13 km/h @ 2k rpm WOT) and the boat does not plane.
Previous owner told me the motor ran great and was just serviced and showed me an invoice for $2000 CAD. What I later learned was that this guy screwed me over, which I guess is my fault for not testing it on the water.
Spoke to the shop that did the work and they were told that the motor does not start. They replaced the power pack, magnets, stator, cleaned the carbs, changed spark plugs, compression test (in the 90's across all 6 cylinders).
They got it to start and handed it back. Said it seemed fine when running on muffs.
Oil side of VRO pump is capped off (not sure if it died or they for some reason wanted to premix). Mechanic asked me to have someone pump the bulb while on the water at WOT to rule out whether or not the VRO pump was the problem.
That did absolutely nothing.
At WOT after about 10 minutes she gives me the overheat warning. If I keep it at about 1.5k rpm the overheat warning does not kick in. Problem is, 10 km/h @ 1.5k rpm at WOT from a 225 HO is a bit ridiculous.
Looking for any and all advice to get me pointed in the right direction. If any other info is needed just let me know.
Thanks for reading
