1983 volvo penta 270 UJ bellows help

So im new to this fourm and i just bought a 1983 bayliner capri 270. I noticed the upper bellows was cracked so i decides to replace it. Im taking the upper gearbox off and disconnected everything. So i go to pull on the upper housing to pull out the whole drive shaft thing and it wont budge. Im i doing something wrong? I looked on the oter fourms and did everything they said to do except i did not take off the steering pin ( i think thats what its called) i just took the 2 bolts out of the top of it but did not put the two 6mm bolts on the sides to remove them. Why wont the UJ slide out? I would post pictures but dont know how to haha. Can someone please help me out? The whole upper gear box lifts off the lower unit but wont pull free from the back of the boat.

you need to remove the pin to get it out past the helmet. the jacking holes are actually 1/4-20 and not 6mm like the manual says.

did you remove the hose clamp securing the bellows to the front of the gear box?

if you find the u-joints rusty, you may want to replace the input shaft seals and u-joint shaft.

Yes i removed the hose clamps for the bellows, the u-joints arent to rusty at all. I have the helmet out of the way, its completly off, i just didnt remove the steering pin on it, is that the reason why the upper gear housing wont pull away from the boat? I can lift it up and out from the lower unit but the u- joints wont slide out no matter how hard i pull. Thank you for the response!

Sometimes the u joint yoke will corrode onto the drive shaft. That's what yours sounds like. Hopefully it isn't to badly stuck. Has the boat been used in salt water much?

This is what it looks like, as u can see, steering pin is still in but helmet is removed. All the bolts are out i believe because the whole upper gear housing comes out of the lower unit but just wont pull out with the u-joints, the bellows clamps are disconnected.

When i bought the boat about abweek ago the guy said it hasnt been is salt water but while taking the bolts off it seems like it was bacause all the bolts were salty and seized up. How would i be able to loosen it up if it is seized up like u suggested?

I can't help with the stuck u joint yoke. I have not had that issue. Hopefully someone who has will chime in.

why did you take the bearing cap off?

Because the oil dip stick was stuck and i couldnt break it loose to have a breather hole when draining the oil because i did t have the right tools with me at the time haha. I got it loose now tho

the breather is the forward most starboard bolt. that gets loosened a bit.

Ohh im new to all of this haha. But why would the u-joint not want to slide out like it should? How can i get it out to replace the bellows?

I am going to assume that there is corrosion holding the u-joint to the PDS shaft. your at the point where you will need to grab it with both hands and pull

Okay thank you, so it doesnt matter if i frmove the steering pin? I took the side bolts off and completly took the helmet off but the sterring pin is still in. That wont have anything to do with the u-joints not comming out correct? And thank you for your help, this boat is really being a pain haha.

I ended up using a come along and then using a long chisel to break the drive shaft loose. A lot of work!

What you are calling the upper housing is the transmission. You need to lift it UP before you can pull it backwards.
Sometimes the coupler below the transmission comes up, its' looks like a pipe nipple.
The transmission should come up and turn 90 degrees, then pull back.

Okay thank u, the picture i posted was the transmission just sitting there like it should. I pulled it up and tured the whole upper housing part every way and tugged on it and nothing seemed to work. I just slid it back in and took the picture because i didnt want to leave the lower unit exposed or anything even tho its covered up with tarps.

Wow haha how hard was it to put back in? Im thinking that mine is this hard to pull out so it must be hard to put back in. Thnks

If it's corroded, getting it back on won't be an issue if you clean everything up beforehand. Perhaps not much consolation, but many many people have had a similar issue and were able to get the the transmission off. Maybe try some Swedish curse words? One thing I would do is put the bearing cap on before you misplace the shims or get dirt in there. Don't forget to order new o-rings for that when you order the rest of them.
