I had removed lower unit on a gen. 2 to change water pump impeller and I notice some gear oil came out of upper part with drive shaft when removed.
Change water pump and put back together, changed all oil out of gear case to resivor.
Now I notice some drops of gear oil on ground.Seems to be coming from upper gear case where drive shaft goes into. Also the level in resivor tank dropped a little bit just sitting there.
Iam thinking I my have a bad seal now?
Any suggestions of how difficult this will be.

Did you replace the quad ring item 7 in link below?

Yes i did.It looks like it coming from above.I had scrubed it down after finishing the oil change and i see signs of oil running from farther above.
I may have to drain oil again and do a preasure test on outdrive,is what iam thinking now to pin point it.

Not "may"..... MUST! (particularly in this case) (highly recommended to always do pressure test after putting drive back together from a impeller change (or other maint work). Plus, you will always see a little bit of oil come out of the seal area of the upper where the vertical drive shaft enters the upper... It is the nature of the beast due to that seal-interface design.
Not getting the clearest "picture" of where your oil is leaking down the drive... Got photos?

MUST, lol, I agree.
I Went and cleaned area off with carb. Cleaner.
Gona watch it again.
seals may have got damage when pulling it out and back in, also probably where dryed up from setting up.
I just swoped this unit out onto my boat and I don't know any history on it.
My resovior has drop about 1/8 to 1/4" in 11/2 weeks just setting there. So sense Iam not using it till late spring I have plenty of time to play with it.

There isn't much above the quad ring on the outside. Either the top plug or the drive to bottle quick connect. Where is it leaking?

Well it's been trimmed up about half way and seem to be coming from where shift slot control area but above that area.We only talking about a drop or 2 a day, but it is a leak.
The carb cleaner has clean that area good so I will watch it the next couple days to make sure it's still that area.

That area is where your outdrive bottle connects, (Item 4)

Check the torque on the six bolts on the drive

I see ,AllDodge thanks, I'll also look in to that.
I was looking at it again and realized it may not be coming from upper drive shaft seal, because that would leak onto top of water pump, correct?
If it's leaking out by shift leakage slot area or it must be from another source like the resivor connection. #4

Agree if it was leaking on the pump (inside) then it could be the drive shaft. I thought it was leaking on the outside

Wil do?
I guess it woulg be better to just remove outdrive and splite apart and then preasure check?

If you drain and pressure test you might find where it's leaking with soapy water. Once you split you still will need to find the leak when it goes back together

You cant test the halves of a gen II after it is split (like you can do with a pre-gen-II, by just plugging the oil passage mating holes). Has to be tested as a unit. You can still soap-bubble check the usual suspects that way..
