Im new to the site, my name is Dan an im from SC and i have a few questions.
from what ive read doing searches is that the 40, 48, and 50 hp from 89-92 foots are interchangable? my next question is how hard is it to rebuild one? or is it better to try to find a used or rebuilt one? any ideas on where to find one? I just bought a 89 bass tracker with the 89 50 HP johnson and the guy i bought it from said that the gear was stripped in the foot....when its in neutral the prop will spin freely and when you put it in gear you cant spin the prop so not sure what i need to do (seems ok) but i havent ran it yet...opinions??? any input or advice would be greatly appreciated...i have never really worked on a lower unit other than putting an impeller in.

thanks in advance, Dan

change the lower gear oil, look for chunks of metal, a few slivers is normal, run it first, see what it does, could be bad gear, misadjusted shift cable, misadjusted shift rod length.
some help here.

thanks for the help....he told me that a seal went out and caused the gear to strip but just sitting not running (havent run it yet) the prop will spin freely in neutral and when i put it it gear i cant turn it. but im guessing the gear could still be stripped and just not really affect it until its under a load???
thanks again for all the help, Dan

Re: 1989 johnson 50HP lower unit question

i went out to the garage this afternoon and put it in gear (not running) and turned the propeller by hand turning the motor over (several times) and i could feel it slip....that makes me think it would be a stripped gear:(

around what would it cost to rebuild one? i have mechanic help but how difficult is it? Or would it be best to try to find a used one? any suggestions ?
thanks
