Hey 83, sounds like a tough break. Glad you have a plan to go forward.

Have you thought about using a PB mixture, made up just a little looser than PL so it flows and clamps easier? Not trying to throw a wrench in your works, but thats how I did mine and had plenty squirt through all the holes and around the edges.

Then again, a nice thick layer of PL would probably do just as well...you are using the super sized 28oz contractor tubes right?

Terry

Terry, i'll definitely be making a a pb mix for round 2. I was not impressed with the PL. I scraped a lot of the skin last night. The PL peeled off in sheets. The places where i poured epoxy from the top will need to be ground off. I don't know if i got some bad PL or what, but I'll be using epoxy PB from now on because if this experience. I know many have used PL successfully, it just didn't bond well for me and i know i did the proper prep work. Even the spots where i got good clamp pressure and contact peel easily.

83mulligan,
Make sure you lay a straight edge across the transom and in the up and down direction too it really need to be a flat a possible. I think the flatness spec is 1/8" on the inside and 1/16" on the outside when you mount the stern drive.
Here is a website to get you all the info. http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Install/gas/86016900.pdf
You will need to add or remove material to get it. I would check you wood transom board too.
Good luck
Bob

Bob, thanks for the great link. I've seen that info before. The 2 x 8 construction of the clamp on the outside pulls the transom flat. The board has some curve to it, that i'll need to check closer. Its not outside 1/8" over the 16" width of the transom plate. It is causing an issue with bonding, so i'll look at it a lot closer this time when its all cleaned up and pretty again.

Progress tonight: got all the PL scraped off transom skin. Got most of PB and PL remnants off the perimeter area of inner hull. Still have just a bit to finish on one side then a ruff and scuff. After that, some minor glasss and pb work on the skin and then its on to the transom board cleanup and repair.

Are you planning on repairing the cutout you made on the transom skin before you put the new transom in, or after?

Heck, I don't know. I have the piece. it would be easy to glue it on after. I'm not really relying on the old skin much for strength so i don't think it matters.

Good point, didn't think about that. Glue it in and putty it up, call it good!

83mulligan,
I commend you for your desire to make sure it's done right. Not everyone would have went back checked their work and then went to the effort to correct it like you did.
Great job. Just keep working at it and you will get there.

I feel for you, all that work and having to re-do a good part of it.

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

83mulligan,
Thanks for the great thread. Looks like you did a great job!

I should explain that I love working with my hands, and have a very complete woodworking shop. I also have a little welding equipment, and I am good with tools at a hobbyist level. So I am confident that is I were to attempt to rebuild this boat, I could do it.

However, I am equally certain that once I got going, I wouldn't want to stop, and I would end up with a full on restoration spending 5-10 thousand dollars. It?s just my nature.

This boat was purchased as a knock around fishing boat, because that?s what I like to do, FISH!

I know many of you do your restorations as a labor of love, and I would be very susceptible to doing that too, but I don?t want to get sucked in.

Now, I am not saying that a 1987 Ranger, fully restored, wouldn't be an absolute thing of beauty, but I can?t justify the expense, time, or effort, when I just want to get a line wet!

Having said that, if I were to attempt the transom repair myself, I have several questions for 83mulligan, and the rest of you could chime in too.

Questions for 83 mulligan:

It looks as though once you found a bad spot by drilling a hole, you then opened a larger area to see how bad it was. This is the square cutout in this picture, right? That being the case, were you now committed to a complete transom repair?

http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...lickcraft-trans-string-overhaul-292930-8.html

What?s with the cheese grater? This is boat abuse, or vandalism. I am sure this wasn?t done by you, and if it was you wouldn?t admit it, but can you explain how this might have happened?

Another question is how much dry rot dictates replacing a transom, or is it possible/advisable to repair a small area if the rest is good?

Last question for now, if I replaced the whole transom, is there anything besides plywood that I should replace it with? What about using the stuff that pours in and then hardens?

Thanks
