I live maybe 30 minutes from downtown Milwaukee. I take a lot of pride in this city and love living here. But lately it seems things are going downhill fast. Is this an isolated issue or is it happening to lots of big cities.

This article sums up some events. JS Article

I mean in the last few weeks we have had

More shootings than I care to mention (28 Memorial Day weekend alone)
A gang rape of an 11 yr old
Murder of a special olympic athlete
Grave robbing (of a 20yr old girl who had just died......dug up for sexual reasons)

Pony, from the city that brought us the Amber alert, may I just say, that last one really takes the cake.

I could do that here.....but just because its habit I lock everything. The problem is the actual city of Milwaukee. I am in the burbs. Still is embarrassing nonetheless

I am with jtex. I don't think we've tried that last one even here in L.A. Although if you took a look down Hollywood Blvd. you'd swear that was happening on every corner. The main difference being that upon further inspection they are actually still breathing . . .

In all seriousness, all major metropolitan areas worldwide have their crime issues. I live in one of the two safest cities in CA and we are just 35 miles due east of downtown.

Pony, thats why I got out of there 10 years ago.

I lived, worked, and recreated in different parts of Milw, and saw the mushrooming deterioration coming fast.

Its a shame what has become of that city in the last 25 years.

Gulp, its becoming the New Orleans of the north, and no Katrina in sight to clean it out. The failing police dept, sherriffs dept, local government officials, and school system, will kill a once great city.

Cross the Milw county line, and its a different world. Some of the best places in the state to live and raise a family.

Baytown has gone downhill here lately.

Police are way out numbered.

Plus there was an instant influx of Katrina refugees.

Walmart has been hit hard, one gang initiation shooting, one kidnapping/murder, one attempted robbery via shotgun in the store.

Also theft is on the rise.

One interesting statistic for Houston. Murder rates are up, and 25% of all recent murders have a Katrina refugee either as suspect or a victim. One Katrina reject recently murdered was also a suspect for a murder.

I'm a retired Chicago Fire Dept. Paramedic. Nothing really shocks me anymore. But that last one ............well..........I'm lost for words. It is a damn shame. :'(

From the city that Jeffrey Dahmer called home, that last one is even shocking.

Roscoe you make some good points. I think the High School graduation Rates speak for themselves.......Its well less than 50%, I wann say its 46ish. Its not even crossing the county line, just certain streets within the city. There are places in the city I wouldn't hesitate to live in, and others that I won't even drive through. I see enough of it everyday just driving from here to UWM. Luckily here is still quite nice. Has grown a lot in the past few years, but I am at the very northern edge of developement in this town.

The Jeffrey Dahmer thing still is odd. I get chills driving by where his apartment was.

More on the Story in this article.

It's not all of Milwaukee. 99% of the crime takes place in about 1% of the city. Downtown is safe with a thriving nightlife, Water Street, Old World 3rd Street & the Third Ward are great. And I don't hesitate to go to the lakefront, the new Pier Wisconsin/Discovery World is awesome (free boat dock with power) 8)
You go 5 miles northwest up MLK drive on the other hand. :%

I know I'll get slammed for this, but all the killings are just a form of birth control for one segment of society. You pick the segment.

Pony,

This is a result of generations of welfare, political appointees to the police chief position, dumbing down of society threw the schools, liberal judges puting preditors back on the street and a complete lack of personal accountability. Role models like Mike Magee (racial hate monger) are given a pass for crime after crime after crime, and a government so corrupt they ordered three times as many ballots as there were voters in the city last election. Remember this was a socialist city for many years.:% That was before the democrats took over and moved the political environment further left.

Re: Is your city this bad?

Its worse than that for the "city" of Milw.

Most suburban schools are boasting 90-95%.

In the city of Milw., 36% that enter 9th grade in a public school, will graduate.

""About 64 percent of Milwaukee students who used vouchers to enter ninth grade at 10 private schools in 1999 graduated from high school four years later, compared with 36 percent of students in public schools, the study found.""

"""Nationwide, roughly half of students in urban high schools fail to receive a regular high school diploma," said Greene, a political scientist and senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, a conservative organization based in New York. "In Milwaukee and Cleveland, it's well under half.""

Re: Is your city this bad?

I always find it ironic that one of the most violent areas in most cities is near MLK blvd. I often wonder what MLK would be thinking if he saw the world today.

I was shot at by a Hispanic gang for no reason near MLK in my hometown.

Re: Is your city this bad?

You all know what the problem is don't you?

The schools for years have been teaching the children that they are in control. Your parents can't spank you. Your teachers can't kick you out of class. The school can't expel you.... can’t stunt that delicate ID.

Society teaches that the police won't arrest you if under 18, and if they do it's a slap on the wrist and kudos from your friends.

You have nothing to do after school besides get in trouble as you have no chores, just blood and guts video games.

Mom and dad aren't home as it takes both incomes to make ends met.. and run up that credit card for your own immediate gratification... and the kids are no help as they can't live without $200 cross trainers and the latest trend in clothes x 12 for each month.

Is it any wonder that the gangs are taking over your streets?... and you only have to look in a mirror to see why.

Latch key kids are future cell block kids.
