Took a break from the boat

7 years ago, the Admiral and I got married on April 1st.

this year we planned 1 2 day canoeing and tent camping weekend up at the Suwanee River state camp ground. However the whole lockdown thing happened.

not to be put down, we parked the truck in the back yard, set up the tent and still camped. we even joked about dropping the canoe and kayak into the pool. however refrained.

so, setting up the truck tent the first time took a bit longer than I anticipated.....

Here are some pics from the Admiral from the pool cage....

While the pool and picnic table are more KOA than state park, we did what we could.

cooked burgers over the fire, including sauteing some mushrooms and onions

did cookie dough in the pudgie pie maker, however the oak coals were no match for that little bit of aluminum casting, so tried the cookies in the cast-iron skillet..... not the greatest, however washed it down with plenty of Whiskey and Coke

Well,

camera on phone started working again.......

Here is some progress in the cabin from April 19th. pulled the one main wall down, stripped out all the cushions and bolsters

cabin bulkhead just in front of the helm. this is the panel with the cabin light switch and radio. a bit of rot on the bottom of the panel.

0414201926_resized.jpg
the area on the floor would make a great step and lockable storage bin

the pic of the cabin prior to pulling the bolsters and forward removable bulkheads.

the lower forepeak bulkhead has a fair amount of dead space. I will be adding two small speakers and an access hatch to store linnens

Fast Forward to this past week and weekend.

picked up a new 10 x 20 canopy. the old one lasted nearly 2.5 years in the florida sun, and only got picked up and tossed into the trees by high winds......once

assembled it Tuesday night in time to be prepared for the rain that cam Wednesday thru Saturday.

Saturday made cardboard templates of the cabin ceiling. in stead of the glue-in hull-liner which really was blah......

making upholstered panels which will be held up with velcro strips.

this does three things.......

first, it follows the foredeck, allowing a matching color scheme of a grey center stripe and outer white panels.

it allows me access to the wiring that was under the headliner should I ever need to repair anything.

where the center panel meet the outer panels, I have room to hide LED strip lights for enhanced cabin lighting.

so, after hours laying on my back and tracing contours onto cardboard with a compass.....

I managed to cut out a pile of panels out of 5mm panels

feel the love AD.........feel the love......

about a week ago, wife said "that boat will never work" in one of her sarcastic moods..... so I said hold my beer...... hooked a garden hose to the inlet hose at the transom shield and secured with a zip tie (drive still in the garage on the stand)...... since the fuel pump requires oil pressure to run, I gave it a shot of boom gas and turned the key...... it started on the ether, and started to die, then the fuel hit the carb and it almost caught itself. turned the key again and the motor was running (first fire up in the boat).

will video tape the next running.

Had to remind her that the cabin re-do was her idea.

Sam...... we have both spirited.....and non-spirited beverages...... just let me know.

its going to be in the water in May with or without the cabin being finished. the charcoal, white and navy blue fabric is showing up later this week for the cabin cushions. over lunch I am swinging by to pick up some fairing compound for the cabin floor. the EVA foam is less forgiving than the 80's shag rug.

.

I had a similar experience with my wife too. Thankfully, I had a spy in her camp. My daughter came to me and said, "Mom doesn't think that boat will ever run or that we're taking it home with us." We both laughed because we knew it was going to run that particular weekend and it was coming back to Alabama on my trailer hitch. Good times. Enjoy.

True glamour life of a boat owner......

respirators and fairing..... pre angle grinder with wire brush......and first round of glass-reinforced fairing compound filling in the big divots.

what worked ok under 80's vintage shag rug and hull-liner, wont work under EVA.

going to gel the cabinet the port-a-crapper sits in..... something not right about a toilet sitting over carpeting......

I should state...... the existing pink filler (assuming bondo or other filler) was slapped in by the factory almost 33 years ago. the sharpie notes inside says "shelf not flat must fill"

all that was covered by the carpet and hull-liner

not as interesting as the sharpie notes I found on the inner gunwales in my old Avanti which was "Hi Beth, Dinner?" which I am guessing that one liner worker was asking a worker at the next station out.

I was painting the ceiling in my parents' house during a kitchen remodel. I wrote Hi Mom! on a wall that I knew would be covered with wallpaper. She saw it a decade later during the next remodel.
