Will this prop fit my boat?

Greetings...I've got a 69 model Mercruiser 160 and have been wanting to try a 21P prop on it. A guy in the next town has one he wants to swap me, but I've googled until I'm blue in the face and can't determine if it will fit. He says the number is 48 63744A 21P. I can't seem to find any info...

Looking for pics of vinyl tops

I'm gonna have a vinyl top made for my 20' 1969 Formula and I want to give the guy an idea of what I want it to look like...but I can't find any pics. I want a top that snaps to the windshield, goes over a couple bows (that I have) and then snaps down along the deck just behind the back to back...

Spun prop, spun coupler or neither???

69 Mercruiser 160 SN 2497444. On the river yesterday, boat was running fine. We pulled up to a sandbar for a bit. We we left I pushed off until the boat started to drift with the current, lowered the unit, started the engine and put it in gear. We moved a little bit but must have run into a...

    My spark plug confusion

69 Merc 160 2497444 with Pertronix ignition. I'm wanting to change plugs. According to NGK it needs a BR6ES. I've read opinions that when you add Pertronix to an older engine, you should use a one step colder plug. Any truth to this or should I stick with the other one?

    Which Pertronix?

69 Mercruiser 160 SN 2497444. If I change to Pertronix, do I want the Ignitor or Ignitor II? I really couldn't tell from the website. They sometimes mention the II as being for modified or high performance, and other places they just call it "improved". Mine is certainly not modded or Hi-Po...

    Puzzling problem with Merc 160

SN 2497444. It runs great at high rpm but if I have to idle or putt around long it starts sputtering. A short run at WOT gets it squared back up for a while but as the day progresses, even that doesn't clear it up. Early on, it starts fine when hot, later in the day, not so well. Temperature...

    Removing threaded hinge pins

I'm helping a friend do some work on his Merc 898. I don't have the serial number handy, but it's in a 1979 Mark Twain. We need to remove the bellhousing hinge pins. He has the Mercruiser tool for the job but they seem to be REALLY tight. We were a little afraid of pulling the threads out of...

125 Force splined washer behind prop??

My brother has a 125 in a mid 80s Bayliner. Over the winter he removed the lower unit to have the skeg fixed. He put it back together a couple weeks ago but didn't put the prop on until today. He realized that he'd lost the splined washer that goes behind the prop. I told him I'd try to find...

Exhaust tube..good idea, bad idea or ??

My exhaust bellows has a pretty good rip in it. I know it won't sink the boat but it folds up kinda weird when the unit is down. I don't want to take a chance on any restriction so I'm gonna replace it. I remember it being a ***** to do last time, and don't really want to drop 50 bucks for...

Need lower shift cable info on Merc 160

I'm gonna change it before the season. It was balky last year and I limped it along, but I'm not gonna press my luck any more. It's a 1969 Mercruiser 160 SN 2497444. It's still the old style. The boat sat unused for several years. I've read up a little on the necessary mods and I think I can...

How many splines on my input shaft?

69 Mercruiser 160 sn.2497444. I've found a lower unit that is cheap enough to buy for a spare but it's from a 73 140. The owner says it has 13 splines on the input shaft and mentions that mine might have only 8. Will this unit work with my drive? thanks

Question...but please don't switch this to Props

because there is never anyone there. I need to figure out exactly which prop I need to get for my 69 Mercruiser 160 sn 2497444. None of the charts I've found go back this far. I want a 21 pitch, aluminum, but want to be sure and get the correct one. I've come across a lot of contradicting...

Need lower shift cable info for 160 merc

My 69 model 160 (sn 2497444) still has the old style lower shift cable, which I understand is no longer available. It still works, but not all the best. I remember reading instructions a year or so ago on how to update and install the newer style, but the guy who wrote them seemed more...

What's the difference in these two props?

I've got a 69 Formula F190 19' w/160 Mercruiser sn 2497444. I use both 19 and 21 pitch props on occasion. I destroyed my 21 this weekend so I started looking around for one. Mine is part number 48-79576-21. I can find lots of them with part number 48-58424A1-21 which seem to fit the same...

    Adjusting the stabilizer fin

I know it's been discussed at great lengths here and I swear I've tried the search feature, but, someone please tell me again...which way do I adjust the fin? My boat pulls a little to the right when I turn loose of the wheel. I can trim to a position where it's not excessive but it's stil...

    Weak spark on Merc 160?

69 Merc 160. I did a complete tuneup in May. Points, condenser, plugs, cap, rotor, wires, fuel filter, set dwell and timing, compression even, all around 130-135. The boat has run like a champ all summer. This Saturday it seemed a little doggy. Sunday was worse yet, to the point of actually...

Someone recommend a depth finder to me

I need to get a depth finder. All I want to know is the depth in feet. I don't care if there is a fish within 500 miles. The smaller in size, the better. I looked at the iboats electronics section and didn't see anything that I really wanted. It's to go on a 20 foot fiberglass runabout. Do...

    Insulate engine cover.....bad idea???

My 69 Formula w/160 Mercruiser has a fiberglass engine cover. The other day I was running the engine on the muffs in the driveway and got to wondering if insulating the inside of the engine cover would make it sound quieter. Now...it's not terribly loud as it is, but hey...if it makes it...

    Mercruiser 80 questions..

A buddy has a 68 Starcraft with one of these and wants to do a tune-up. He's been unable to find much info so I told him I'd post here. Does this thing have conventional points? If so, would someone have a OEM or aftermarket number for them. Also other basics like plug type and number and...

    Changing U-joint bellows....question

I removed the drive to grease the u-joints and found some water in the u-joint bellows. Upon inspection, I found a tear in the upper side of it. My question..basically what does it involve to change it? Does the gimbal housing have to come off? I changed the exhaust bellows last year without...
