so does that mean the trim tab is the protecter? there is a hole in the trim tab but looks empty.

also the trim tab shows no corrosion and that motor is run in nothing but salt water

Its not your trim tab, in fact your motor may not have an anode. Look inside your hob on your lower unit. Some of those older motors had the attached to the bearing carrier.
