Hey guys, I was just cruising down a channel with my boat and noticed the ignition switch was turned a little too far to the left as it must have loosened up a little, so I grabbed the back of it as I was driving to hold it as I tighten the nut on the front and I got zapped from the wire connections on the switch !! Is this normal or is there a problem ??

An ignition switch should only have +12Vdc on it, I would think. 12VDC will zap you a bit, if you are grounded close to the source of the voltage, say across your fingers. Is that what happened?

The switch has more than 12v on it , the blk/yel kill wires has full ignition voltage depending on rpm can be as high as 300v!!!!!!

Yes the "M" terminals on the back side of the ignition switch will have the primary side of the coils on it as voltage. So I can easily understand getting shocked if you grab the back of it. When you turn off the ignition, you literally short out/together the primary side of the spark coils. That IS why it stops firing. And that IS the same thing that happens with the kill switch as well...

I had something like that happen to me on a Stingray I had years ago with straight pipes out the back suddenly when I touched the throttle I got zapped and it was big PITA for the rest of the day, I should have looked under the hood but did not, and also did not notice it was not going as fast either, a plug wire came off and was laying on the throttle cable zapping me with plug voltage, the motor was a 460 cu in monster and so loud with those pipes I did not notice it was only running on 7 cylinders
