13 years ago I started with this 12ft Gaycraft with a 1963 5.5hp Evinrude.

Just this spring, I moved to my 4th boat. A 1992 Cruisers 2870 Rogue with twin 5.7l/275hp Volvo Duo-props and a 6.5kw generator.

First boat, only boat.

Next step will be in the 60-100ft range if I can convince the banks. Thinking of buying an old tug to live on, something along those lines...

..... Thinking of selling my condo alltogether & getting a new yacht!

Soggy Feet -
Fellow Burlington resident here. I reserved a mooring at Coates Island for next season; now all I need is a boat! Looking to pick up my first one hopefully in the next few weeks & then stare at the thing all Winter.

I've had a few 17' & 18' footers I've looked at & one 20' .... all bow riders. As choppy as Lake Champlain can be however; would a 20' boat make THAT much of a difference?

First boat - 1980 Bayliner Bowrider (not this one, but much like it). Had to do everything from the floor to the windshield.

A few in between, and now up to a 2001 Carver 374 Voyager (40' LOA, twin 7.4L Mercs, 7.3 KW Kohler genset)

I guess my first boat was a canoe! :O I have been on many a boats as a Dive Instructor, but I just got my first one. Its a 1968 Fibra project boat that was given to me for helping fix a commercial dive boat here in the Keys. I guess I did a lot more than that too for the guy, teaching classes, built and host his website (KeyLargoDiveCenter) and I keep helping him on his boat. As a retired auto technician, I have worked on thousands of cars... but only a few boats! :D

Re: your first boat! and where you are now in pict.

First boat was a canoe, so, like a sailboat, it doesn't really count

First power boat was this 1968 14' Arkansas Traveler powered by it's original 40hp Evinrude Lark X purchased in the summer of '98
Coxies.jpg

in between there was a 16' Grew and a 20' Fiberform

now, it's the 1989 24' Doral Cavalier
DSC02064.jpg

hmmm, 12 years to move 10' ... well, you can't rush these things :D

Re: your first boat! and where you are now in pict.

Great topic, I don't have picts ready but have made a steady progression....started with (and still have) 1972 12 foot Duranautic that had a 1964 Evinrude 10 HP until some body lifted that out of my yard, now has 1994 9.9 HP Evinrude. Next was 1989 Chaparall 187XL with 90HP Johnson - fun bowrider boat, next was 1995 Wellcraft 230 fish, walkaround cuddy with 200HP Evinrude, then came 2000 Bayliner 2452 with Mercuiser 5.0 I/O - great travelling boat, just sold it cause now have 2004 Bayliner 280 Command Bridge w/Mercruiser 350 MAG and BIII outdrive. Next step will be last, few more years of work then look for something 32-36 diesel trawler for long hauls. Have enjoyed them all, as we moved through different phases, i.e. kids, wakeboarding, skiing, fishing, cruising, etc. Have take these various boats to, Erie Canal, Lake George NY, Great South Bay on Long Island,Outer Banks NC, Charleston, SC, Florida coast and Florida Keys, many points in between. Many hundreds of fun nautical miles.... looking forward to many more

My first, and only boat, for now. A 94 Tracker sportsman 14 with a 20hp mercury tiller steer. Nice little fishing boat and moves pretty good too, about 20-25mph! :)

Re: your first boat! and where you are now in pict.

13uchy, I really don't have any experience with anything smaller than the houseboat, but I can tell you there aren't really that many days where I have any complaints about the waves.
The narrow point between the inner and outer bays (between Coates Island and Marble Island) is usually the worst I encounter in Malletts Bay, and its primarily due to the necked down boat traffic.. not the wind.
But as jjacobs007 said, "the bigger, the better". ;)

I can tell you that every time I try to do an overnight on the other side of Champlain, I get beat up either going over or coming back. Three trips in 2 years I've been slammed with 4ft waves for an hr straight.
Check the Champlain forecast before you hit the broad lake....

For me to do the big boat thing, I've made a few other sacrifices... mainly, I don't have a permanent address. I rent a spare room from a friend for the winter, and live on the boat in the spring/summer/fall. 3/4 of the year, all my belongings are in a 10x20 storage unit.

The big boat idea (dream?) is me thinking that I'd rather have a boat I could live on year round, and pay the same as a mortgage on a house, but without paying property taxes, than be stuck in a house, with property taxes. ;)
