Why have I read on here that so many people have had new motors put in because that was what the repair shop or marina said it needed? I have owned or responsible for fixing MANY boats between family and friends. I have never told one of them that they need a whole motor. Up in New England, our season is only a couple of months long. I bought my current boat new in '86. It doesn't have 250 hours on it. I've only replaces a couple of coils, gimble bearing and a coupler. It sat for a stretch for 7 years in my garage. Didn't blow up in there either. Used my brothers boat then. He's got to have over 1000 hours on his 305cid.

Re: You need a new motor

Marine engines almost never "wear out".

(My last boat was a 66 MarkTwain that dad bought new.....the engine went 1500 hours before the hr meter failed in the early 80's. I sold it in 2005. It had never had the head off and still ran strong)

Most of them die due to neglect, little or no maintenance or freeze damage.

A lot of shops replace engines in other cases because they don't want the liability.

What does 6meter mean?
